The rulebook doesn't mention it, but is there any way to destroy spacecraft
_after_ launch? In civ1 they would kindly call them back it the capital
was taken.

This still happens in civ2 doesn`t it? I`m sure it did the other day when
I destroyed someones capital!.

I think the only way is to beat it to the punch - quickly build a very
fast spaceship with minimal people & life support and try to get it to
the destination faster than theirs can go - the first one there wins!

Sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't. I think if the civ has enough
money you get a message about "Capital relocates to ...", and
there is no effect on the spaceship.

If the CIV has other cities AND >= 1000 gold the capital may be
relocated before it falls. Yes, if the capital falls (without
being relocated) then the spaceship is recalled.

Drat! Thanks, this appears to be the correct answer. Unfortunately, this
behavior isn't how it's written up in the manual (the manual claims that
if you capture the enemy capital before launch, you burn the spacecraft
on its runway -- what, do they fly it to another city during the battle?)
I received some E-mail from people who seemed to beleive that it works
otherwise, but that doesn't match my experience. A short cheat-sheet:
Capture enemy capital
Before launch After launch
------------- ------------
What happens in Civ I Spacecraft dest. Spacecraft dest.
What happens in Civ II See Cole's msg See Cole's msg
What happens according to manual Spacecraft dest. Spacecraft OK
The manual was wrong for Civ I and it appears to be wrong for Civ II.
This "relocation" business saving the spacecraft is very annoying. It
means that there is no way to win once you get a certain distance behind
on Deity level. I often used to hang in there even with a small
civilization, build a spacecraft even though I knew the NPC civilizations
could do it faster, and do a commando raid on the leader's capital to
destroy their spacecraft, but that will no longer work.
Yep, destroy that civ.
Easier said than done in most cases. My strategy for dealing with
the space race is to monitor the progress of the other space craft
being built, so I'm at least keeping up with them. When one launches,
make sure I'm in a position to build a faster one to beat them there.
I'll sell improvements right and left to do so.

You have to make them have no capital at all. So when you destroy their
capital, and they buy another one (cost about $1000), you have to capture
that too, and so on. Typically on Deity this means 5 or 6 captured cities
before you manage to get their spaceship.
