Just got it the other day based on Tom Chick's review.Really enjoying

Great game, very refreshing vs all the other traditional strategy
games. Linear story quite challenging. Working out spell combinations
is really fun.

Even though I feel like the only one playing it, yeah, I'm really having
fun playing Magic & Mayhem. Right now I'm about 2/3 through the single
player game, and I'm even more enthusiastic about the game than when I
started.
The combination magic system is very elegant, the music is great, and the
gameplay is challenging without that feeling of beating your head against
the wall. The best aspect of the game is the various combinations of
creatures and spell - some very creative things here on Mythos' part. I
also love the ability to rotate the maps - very helpful in this sort of
3rd perspective game.

I would venture to say that M&M is far better than any of the three
game's you've mentioned above. YMMV. But it's also very different
from each of them. One of the best things going for M&M is that is so
different from "the usual". But then again, I'm the guy who gave it
FIVE (!!!!) stars [only *four* exclamation points?], so I may be
biased.

I wish I could the same. I am up to Styx now, and I'm pretty much ready
to delete the game from the drive. My comments below clarify what I think
is working against the game.

The magic system is creative, and I basically like the system. However,
the bad points are:
1. The game depends heavily on luck. Lots of times, I am noticing that
a lucky placement of POPs nears my starting position and away from the
enemy completely decides the battle. One on Styx, the game placed right
beside the enemy woman and her army of undead. Obviously, my ally and
I didn't last long
2. Which brings me to the point about how incredibly stupid the allies are.
They are so worthless, esp. the uncle, that I wish allies had just been left
out. I am really tired of the uncle wandering off right into enmy armies
and getting the daylights beat out of him. A large percentage of the time,
I have to replay a battle because of the allies dying about the time I have
secured a couple of POPs.
3. This last bit may mean that I am playing on too high a difficulty level.
I started out on adept because the description made it sound like the
normal level. If it's not, they should be clear about this. Anyway,
I tried the Apprentice level without better results, so I believe the
two factors above dominate the game too much.
4. Finally, I really don't like the fact that sometime you can get into
impossible situations. In Styx, I got stuck in the rocks surrounding
Charon's hideout. The graphics made it appear that I could walk through
the river back to shore, but no, I'm stuck. This was after defeating
Charon, so I have to completely redo the level. Sheesh.
Perhaps I am doing something wrong, because others seem to be perserving
and prevailing. But I am hitting the point of diminishing returns of
enjoyment. I haven't tried multiplayer, but I suspect having a computer
right at the minium requirements will put me at disadvantage.

Magic & Mayhem does seem to require a more flexible approach to resources
- you have to be able (and willing) to flow with the battles, and use
maneuver to your advantage.
I found that my game really improved when I started to adopt a mobile
approach to the game, keeping in mind that POP's can't be destroyed, and
they don't run out of mana.
In other RTS games (*craft, TA), the strategy of grabbing resources, and
_holding on to them, regardless_ works really well. Since you have to
invest in harvesting structures, and can build decent defenses, this
makes sense. Since any creature can act as a mana conduit in Magic &
Mayhem, this hold the resources at any cost strategy isn't very
effective.
When I tried to hold one or two POP's, regardless of what the enemy was
doing, I would get slaughtered. Since those "big gun" spells like Storm,
or Inferno(?) are so powerful, it is hard to defend a POP against an
enemy wizard who has a lot of mana. Even if you hold the POP, you lose
more mana (in terms of dead creatures, destroyed totems, etc.) than the
POP was worth. To add to this, the enemy wizards often start out with
more mana and creatures than you do, so you can't beat them with raw
strength (though two hasted griffins will do if you have the mana...)
What I've found success with has been mobile attacking forces (centaurs
are great for this - since they are both fast and sturdy, with a good ranged
attack). Missile attacks work well since the enemy wizards often put a
strong creature on the POP, but one without a missile attack, so you can
wear it down from a distance, and then use Raise Dead to bring it over to
your side.
Moving fast, hitting POP's when they are lightly defended, and holding
them only as long as it is profitable to do so has helped me more or less
zip through the second continent and the first part of the third.
Maneuver is a much bigger factor in Magic & Mayhem than other RTS games.

Haste just increases movement - which means that the enemy mage isn't
going anywhere. With two hasted griffins, the enemy mage can't
outrun them, and when they catch him (or her) it is usually all over. I
usually use this when I've gotten a majority of the PoP's and want to
finish the enemy mage quickly.
Griffins are great for this assasination attack because they are hard to
subvert, tough as hell, and in addition to the high damage per attack,
the damage of the attack usually stuns the wizard for a short period of
time. With two griffins attacking, at least one gets a flank or rear
shot, and the combination of stuns/damage makes this a pretty tough
situation to get away from. Fireballs, inferno, etc won't do enough
damage to kill the griffins until it is too late. Lure will get the mage
some breathing room, so it isn't an absolute kill (and Stone Gaze can
really hurt the griffs), but it sure is fun. Adding Excalibur or the
Scythian Bow isn't really necessary, but if you have the mana, why not?
: Centaurs are great in small mobs but I'd rather send one
: Manticor than two Centaurs.
The thing I like about the centaurs is their attack has greater range
than the manticore and does more damage, even though they are nowhere near
as good at HtH combat. Figure 20/ attack (2 centaurs) vs. 4/attack for
the mantiore's tail. (of course, HtH the manticore is much more
impressive, but the point of standing off from a PoP and clearing it with
missiles is _not_ to take damage).
A tactic I've had good luck with is using Gryphons to take POPs. They're
fairly powerful, move very quickly, and can be quickly redeployed if attacked
by a strong force. They do take 100 mana to summon, so you can only start
with one, at least if it's early in the game. If you put all your eggs in one
basket, watch that basket. :-)
In the last game I was playing (where your uncle is trapped inside the house),
I left him there, and holed up in another small house that had a POP in it. I
used alligators to hold it down until I could save up for a gryphon, and just
kept moving it away from whatever POP it was on anytime it came under attack.
Once I had the second and third gryphons up, it didn't take long to win.
The computer is very good at actual battle tactics though; don't get into a
duel if you can possibly avoid it.

I was flying around while attacking Charon. This was a bad idea because
the ornithopter magic ran out while I was still attacking. At that moment,
I was flying over the rocks surrounding Charon's lair. I fell into those
rocks on the side close to the river, which is why it looked like I should
be able just to walk through the rocks and shallows where I was.
Unfortunately, I couldn't, so when I get back around to it, I'll have to
do the level all over again.
Russell Davoli
Didn't you save the game in the middle of the level somewhere? Or perhaps
you are playing "iron man"style. I'm too chicken to do that -- I usually
save the game about 10 times during a level. :-)
Jim
Too bad you got trapped in the rocks, but I have to admire anyone who
goes after Charon while airborne.
When you replay it, you might find it helpful to soften up Charon with
bat swarms or exploding bats (lucifer's something-or-other). I don't
think he has any healing spells, so any damage you do before you fly into
that central spot makes him easier to kill.
Doh! You can do that?
Serioulsy, this is something that I've completely missed. I didn't see
such a command when skimmed through the skimpy manual. Is that in
the "Battle Options" menu called up by the Escape key?
No wonder I thought this game really sucked in this area. I've always
hated games that had this limitation as a "Feature". Anyone who's played
Marathon knows the pain I am talking about.
Russell Davoli
Hehehe, yes, you can do that. Or at least I can. I have the U.S. version 1.1
(check the title screen) and if I hit Escape, Save Game is one of the
options (I don't recall it saying "Battle Options" anywhere though). Also,
F2 will bring up the Save Game window directly, while F3 brings up the Load
Game window.
Like I said, I can't live without it!

Once you've occupied some places of power & got a steady stream of
mana, phoenixes are even more effective. I once managed to kill Charon
without going near him, simply by sending flocks of phoenixes over.
Once you've killed him, you can then get the ornithopter, collect the
holy water & go thru the portal.

Geez, I wish I'd thought of that - I don't usually take Phoenixes
(phoenixi?) but this is a great, painless way to take out Charon.
I did have fun though when I summoned about 10 bats, Excalibur'd them,
and sent them over to ruin Charon's day. Waste of mana, but what the hell...
One odd thing about Charon's area - when I went over there to kick his
ass, every now and then it seemed like one of my creatures would be
whisked away and dumped in that hole in the center. Is that just a local
effect, or is it a spell I haven't seen yet?
Ouch - that must have sucked. After the first time I get my head handed
to me, I try to save a few times in a level. I have to admit that
sometimes I will just restart and try a different spell combination - its
great that you can vary your approach so widely in this game.

It's a local effect. The entrance to the underworld is not a very
nice place :)
Oh, btw, Bats with Excalibur and Iron Skin. They're right bastards!
Actually anything with Excalibur and Iron Skin. Zombies are my fav.
Just hope the enemy doesn't have disenchant!
