Settlers 2: two questions

Q1.
Is there a trick to recruitment? In scenario 4 (the first one with
ships), they started to recruit when I made swords & shields with the
stuff in my base. Then I ran out of iron. Later, I found more iron,
and made more swords & shields; but no more recruits appeared. I had
plenty unemployed, plenty beer, plenty gold, plenty swords & shields,
and recruitment turned up to max. But I could not induce those guys to
pick up the weapons.

Q2.
My ships mostly drive around empty, in a big herd. Is there a way of
getting them to be more useful?

You need swords, shields AND beer in the SAME place.

No! The AS (artificial stupidity) that handles ships and warehouses
has a negative IQ.

Yes there is: Revert all goods to one harbourbuilding, Close up all
other storage buildings. When all the goods are transferred to that
harbour, open up another harbour. When all goods are transferred
reverse the stream between the Harbours.

Nonsense of course, but I couldn't pass that up ;-)

Yes it's nonsense ! I have tried out that teori, but my folk's carry
out stuff until the first flag is full. And it does not help whit 3
ship's outside the harbor doing nothing.

I did send an e-mail to Bluebyte about the problem, but they have not
answerd me yet.
