I'm having a hard time using this card. I am a new player and not
sure of all the intricacies. But I can't seem to turn it into an
assembly worker and attack or defend with it. After I turn it into
the assembly worker, it won't let me assign it as a blocker or
attacker, it will just ask if I want to "rechange" or convert to mana.
Does anyone know what I need to do? Also, I'm not sure what good the
Lifelace spell is. It turns the color of any target card, but what
does that do, specifically?
Thanks for any help!

You need to make sure it's converted _before_ it's time to declare
attackers or blockers (that is, before you click "Done" for your pre-combat
main phase, or "Done" to fast effects after he's assigned attackers). When
it's asking you to choose creatures is too late - it needs to already be an
Assembly Worker by this point.

Several cards operate on the colour of other cards. For example, if you're
playing a Green/White deck against Black, and the CP summons a Black Knight
(with Prot(White)), you'll be glad to be able to Lifelace your Wall of
Swords :-) Or if you interrupt a spell and make it Green while casting it,
you can use your Wooden Sphere to gain life from it. That sort of thing.
It's not the most amazingly useful of rares, but the *laces can be handy.

Convert Mishra's Factory into an Assembly Worker during your
main pre-combat phase -- then it will be available to be assigned
as an attacker on your turn. Convert it into an Assembly Worker
during the "Fast Effects...Assign Attackers" phase of your
opponent's combat phase -- then it will be available to be assigned
as a blocker during your opponent's turn.

Maybe it's just me, but I've noticed that sometimes, not every time mind
you, that the newly converted Assembly Worker (2/2) has summoning
sickness. What's the deal with that? It usually happens when I try to
block the CP. Any thoughts as to what circumstances are causing it? BTW,
I personally like the game even though I never played the card game.

It will have summoning sickness if you just played it during your current
turn or, if it's your opponent's turn, during your previous turn. This works
just like any summoned creature.
>It usually happens when I try to block the CP.
This is probably because by that time you've forgotten that you just recently
played the card. :^) In any event, summoning sickness does not reduce the
Assembly Worker's efficacy as a blocker.
I haven't played the computer game version so I can't tell you about Mishra's
Factory, but as for the lifelace it is supposed to change the target card to a
green card, which would be good if you had a some form of protection from
of protection from green or something that could only target a green card etc.

I noticed this problem, too. Then I realized that on the first turn on
which you activate Mishra's Factory, it always has summoning
sickness. On the second and later turns after playing the card
(for me at least), it never has summoning sickness.
I like the game a whole lot, too.

I believe the assembly worker has summoning sickness on the turn that
the factory is played. This would be consistent with the other creatures
work. If you don't activate the factory on the turn in which you bring
it out, I believe the worker will not have summoning sickness. work.
I stopped playing magic in real life over a year ago, but that's
what I seem to remember.
The lace cards are good in combos, such as with the royal assassin or
northern paladin (which let you destroy black cards). Mishras factory
is one of the best cards in the game, but a little complicated. It
SHOULD let you assign it as a blocker or attacker, as long as you
activate it before the attack round. not against flyers, of course.
also, a neat trick with the mishras is that you can use it to pump
itself. try this: activate it using some other source of mana. block
a creature with it, then during the fast effects for blockers, tap it
again to pump up a assembly worker. pump up thte SAME factory, and
it'll tap to go to 3/3, still block the creature, but not deal any
damage. if you've blocked a 2 power creature or less, it'll block it
and survive, ready for the next round.
pat
It has it because you played it that turn, leastwise, that is when I run into it. Makes it hard for me to decide which one to play first round; swamp or mishra.
Or maybe you didn't and it is another bug?

...and don't forget to use OTHER mana besides the factory itself when you
activate the worker, or it will just tap and you won't be ale to block or
attack with it.
this is one of the rules. the first turn you *gain control* of a
creature, you cannot attack or use any abilities that require tapping,
unless otherwise specified, like the 'Ball Lightning.' It doesn't
matter if the card is not a creature and you later turn it into a
creature on that turn. In the case of teh mishra's factory, you can
still tap for mana or give other assembly workers +1/+1.

Let's face it: while the laces aren't utterly without use, you can
usually find something much better to put in your deck.

Note that this will not work when blocking with an Assembly Worker
with summoning sickness, since abilities which require tapping are
verboten.
I recommend turning on "show all cards' summoning sickness" when
playing with Mishras. Sometimes you have two of them out, and
old one and a new one, and you want to be sure to turn the old
one into an Assembly Worker (since it can tap itself for +1/+1)
and leave the new one a Mishra's Factory (since lands aren't
affected by summoning sickness, and it can pump the Assembly
Worker for +1/+1 only while a land). This lets you hold off a
3/3.

I haven't had any problems with the Mishra's Factory card and it's been in
my deck for the last few days. I haven't had any trouble using it to attack
or to block.
If you turn it into an Assembly Worker on the turn that you cast it you
will not be able to do anything with it since it will now have summoning
sickness like any other creature.
I believe that you also need to change it to an Assembly Worker before the
attack phase is declared if you intend to use it as a defender or a
blocker.
As far as the various Lace cards are concerned there are a large number of
cards in Magic that act against cards of a certain color. For example the
special abilty of a Northern Paladin allows it to destroy any Black
Creature. If you were to Lace your opponent's Shivan dragon to black you
would now be able to destroy it with the Paladin.
In a similar vein if you were playing a Black-Green deck and you had in
play the black enchantment Deathgrip that counters green spells you would
now be able to use your Lifelace to change any spell your opponent casts to
green and then counter it.
In general the Laces are considered weak cards. I've never played with them
much in real Magic and whenever I get one in the computer game I quickly
sell it off and buy something else.

I've had similar problems trying to assign creatures with special effects as blockers
- I had a goblin polka team which I wanted to throw beneath the feet of an attacking
beastie (can't remember what it was), but the only option I got was to activate the
tapping effect (and at that point I hadn't told the computer player to wait before
entering the attacking phase, so I'd already missed my chance). Anyone have a quick
answer, or do I have to go and rtfm ?
>Does anyone know what I need to do? Also, I'm not sure what good the
>Lifelace spell is. It turns the color of any target card, but what
>does that do, specifically?
Basically, it changes the colour of a spell! For example - if the computer has in play a
white knight (protection from black), and you cast 'pestilence', then that knight will
take no damage from your pestilence spell (which is black). If you then cast lifelace on
your pestilence, it becomes green, at which point the protection is useless.
(Incidentally, my bug tally hasn't been particularly high - I've seen the computer use
artifact abilities on creatures that it hasn't yet summoned, but the worse bug to hit me
was when I was playing my black/minor red deck - For three turns I had a single mountain in
play, desparate for some more mana, and on my next draw, what did I get? A Forest!!! Bah..
Gripes:
Not being able to restore an old game from within the Shandalar section is a bit of a pain,
and it would have been nice to have more than just the plain 4th ed cards - it makes the
deck builder a tad less useful, because I can't really try out the decks that I want to
build in the real world.

Unlikely this was a bug. Depending on your skill level setting, there
is a minimum deck size. If your deck falls below this minimum, the
slack is taken up with random basic land cards (that are 'phantom' and
exist only for the duel).

Both of these things are happening because you're rushing through combat
without reading screen messages. Don't click on a blocker until the screen
prompts you with the message to do so. If you click on a creature with
a special ability at any other time, it uses the special ability.

There's a minimum deck size. If your deck is smaller, it puts in random lands
to bring you up to that number.

Actually, if Mishra doesn't have summoning sickness, you can tap it to
pump itself up, making it a 3/3, so it can block a 2/2 and live.
However, it doesn't deal any combat damage then. Just a little hint
from someone who's been playing Magic since 2 months after it came out
;-)
Ex
Thanks to everyone for all the help. Finally got it working!
Right. No creature can attack, or use an ability that requires it to
tap, until you begin a turn with it in play; that goes for Mishra's Factories/
Assembly Workers as well as more conventional creatures.
>I believe that you also need to change it to an Assembly Worker before the
>attack phase is declared if you intend to use it as a defender or a
>blocker.
Not quite. If you want to use a Mishra's Factory as an attacker, you
have to convert it into an Assembly Worker during your main phase before your
attack, as you say; but if you want to use it as a blocker, you don't have to
be this early--you can convert it during the "Fast Effects: Assign attackers"
phase, after your opponent declares the attackers.
>In general the Laces are considered weak cards.
Right. Unless you have a very special-purpose deck, you'll want to
ditch these.
