I have a copy of Caesar III in my right hand right now (thus making my
typing much slower). 100% genuine CD, supplied to a friend with his
PC (who no longer wants the game). I played it for hours and hours on
his PC, never with any problems. I install it on my XP box, I keep
getting "Replace C3 CD in CD-ROM drive", despite the fact that it's
sitting there nicely. I think to myself "Compatibility issue" and
reformat my HD. I now have Win98 and WinXP dual-booting. (There are
several other reasons why I have done this - it's not just C3)

On my 98 boot, I install teh game no problem, but I get that message
again. I try using both the original disc, and the backup CD I made
(I always make backups in case the originals get damaged - happens
quite often to me). I have 2 CD drives, and with a copy of C3 sitting
in each drive, I still get the message. I switch the copies around in
the drives, it still doesn't work!

On the root of the CD is this strange little program that doesn't seem
to do much by the name of SETORUN.EXE - does this have anything to do
with it?

TIA

Is it looking for the right Drive letter?(My Drive is Z, and some older
games will only look for E. Except...I have C3 and it works fine.)

I've had problem with old Sierra games detecting CD-ROM with drive letter Z.
According to Sierra technical support the drive letter has to be N or less
with their old games. I don't know if this is the case with new games.

have you tried finding a nocd patch on gamecopyworld.com?

My drives line up like this:

A - FDD
C - HD : 98 Partition
D - HD : XP Partition
E - CR-ROM 0
F - CD-ROM 1 (from which the game was installed)
M - Zip250

Update: Now when I run SETORUN.EXE it brings up a message box saying
(C) 1999 Packard Bell NEC. Could this have something to do with it?

The ChiRho Network - at last a good use for the letters "X" and "P"

Some older games automatically assume that the highest drive letter is your CDRom
drive. This might be the problem, since in your case the highest letter is your
ZIP drive. In bot XP and '98 this is easy to change in the syetem properties I
believe.

Success!

Some older games also require the CD to be in the first CD-ROM drive on your
system, although I don't know if C3 was one of them. You might try
installing and playing from drive E:

Have you tried disabling one of the CD drives? (either physically or through
hardware Properties, or your BIOS settings) Then re-install C3 from the
remaining drive and you'll know the game is looking on just that drive. It
could also be that your drives are incompatible with the copy-protection on
the C3 disc (that's an older game but you never know). In which case, go
grab a nocd patch from gamecopyworld.com.

The setorun.exe file may need parameters to run. Look at the autorun.inf
file in a text editor.

Yes. Didn't work! (Incorrect file size)
The only patch for English version, so given that didn't work there
doesn't seem to be much hope.

Does anyone think that it being an OEM version has anything to do with
it (especially a Packard Bell OEM)? Just that not only will the no-cd
patch not work, but upgrading to 1.0.1 fails (also says it's not a
valid 1.0, despite the Readme saying "Version 1.0", and a couple of
other files also giving that idea. The progam C3.EXE itself doesn't
have version information so I can't check.)

OK, I think I've got the problem pinned. All I need is a copy of
C3.EXE - I have the rest of the files on CD, and AFAIK the game can't
be played with just the C3.EXE file, so posting it on the net (and
emailing me the address) will be pretty safe.
(mister[@]chirho[.]i12[.]com). I'd be really greatful if anyone with
the game could just do that for me.
