Online gaming is fun and it is the only way for software
publishers to prevent piracy. If you do not like the idea, you are
perfectly free to do something else.
I bought the previous version, 1701, from GamersGate because it was on sale
for cheap and not only did I have to activate it but also enter 3 different
serial numbers. On the bright side, I don't need a DVD disk in the drive to
play it and it is a good game.
Im not against online games at all - just being asked to do a criminal check
in order to play a game is what I am against. So no I wont be buying this
game on principle. Piracy is a fact but the way developers are treating it,
the solution is far worse. They are putitng the problem onto innocent
players in order to make them their profits and I'm not doing it. And if
they continue like this I will be ending my gaming altogether and getting
another hobby.
Except it doesn't prevent piracy.

Don't rise to his bait. You're in a large majority of PC gamers who agree
with you: all the DRM sh*t punishes legit buyers a lot more than it punishes
pirates, so the companies are just hurting themselves.

I didn't buy it for the same reason as you did but at least they
explicitly state what the copy protection is on the box. Most
publishers either don't bother at all, or settle for "this product
contains copy protection and an EULA."

In terms of single player, apparently some console games have less
than ten hours of gameplay so you might as well rent rather than buy.

The surprising thing is that these are the guys that made a big
song-and-dance when they dropped Starfarce. I hope the u-turn didn't
give them whiplash.

I make sure I know what the copy protection is before I pay the money,
and if I think it's too much hassle I'm not buying. I take this
attitude with /all/ games - if Elite IV has evil DRM then I'm not
buying that either. The time I save will come in handy for updating my
FFE site. ;-)

The best Frontier: First Encounters site on the Web.
nos...@jades.org is currently broken, please reply on group!
I agree completely its getting to the point where I hardly buy any computer
games these days - partly because of the online activation etc required
which I am against on principle, and partly becuase there is so much dross
around that I get bored playing the demo never mind the full game or I know
from the box exactly what the game is going to be like before I even try it
because I have been there before, done it already. I think recently only
Call of Duty had really interested me.
But Frontier stands out as the only game I have ever played that has been
part of my life for like years other come close (mainly the better flight
sims such as EF2000, TAW and Falcon 4) but no games released over the last
5-10 years come even close to Frontier as a game.
I do think as you get older though your imagination goes a lot which doesnt
help - I do wonder what I will think of the next Elite game if it ever
arrives, I'm sure I will not spend much time on it due to other
committments. These days I prefer watching telly or playing board games!
There are some brilliant board games around these days you know!! And a good
board game is a hell of a lot more enjoyable than playing Anno1404 will be -
I can guarantee it. If you want a very good one I can recommend Carassonne,
Circus Maximus, or Ticket to Ride but there are loads of others - at the
moment board games are in a definite high point - just the same as computer
games were 15 years ago in fact I think.
