The only way I found to keep the quick save was to either quit the game
during the day (alt-q I think), or reboot. I guess the game deletes the
quick save file at the end of the day.

Alt-X, actually. I have to use the Alt-X cheat some, especially when
your team walks into a sector and immediately takes a grenade in the
middle of the group. :(
You could always pkzip them up, or copy them to a savegame directory.
You need to get quick.sav, office.sav, and day.sav.

You guess right, as it's in the doc, page 22 in the paragraph named "Quick Save".
I quote:
"All quick saves are automatically deleted at the en of the day."
This sentence is easy to miss, though, and I lost a couple good starts
(like "let's save and quickly see what happens at the end of the day").

Correction: Just copy the quick.sav file will do the trick. It doesn't
matter whether you have the other two or not.
One more thing, if you get a grenade in the middle of your group when
you entering a new sector, you can always use "quick load" back to the
point before entering. You don't really need to "Alt-X" and re-start
the game.

How embarrassing. I was so fixated on "quick save" that I forgot about
the quick restore function. That should make life a lot easier.
I posted above that all three files had to be saved based on the file
modification times of the files. I guess I just did a quick save real
close to the time I started the day.
