I had something like 30 Gryphons. I launched them all at once in
groups of 6 from all different directions and they made mincemeat out
of the portal area. Pretty easy really. The hard part was the
initial assault at the beginning of this scenario.

I had 4 mages on the island surrounding the portal (not the island the portal
is on). I had 3 step back and 1 step up and cast blizzard to as close
to the portal as I could. Soon, 3 daemons came running out after him. As
soon as they got close, I had the 3 other mages cast blizzard right on top
of him. The daemons were killed. I did the same thing from a different
angle on the island to lure the other daemons, and it worked. I suppose
you could be a little less self-sacrificial than I and use a line of archers
or griffons to kill the exposed daemons. Once you take out the daemons, you
can blizzard 1 or 2 of the death knights before cleaning up with a few
paladins.
I never built more than a transport in the body of water surrounding the
portal.

I had the same experience with Griffins - however they can do damage to the
portal! For some reason, a RMB click on the portal does nothing - click on
the attack icon then LMB click the portal and the griffins will start doing
damage. Bug, methinks!

Sounds like you've built enough archers/guard towers to hold off the inital dragons. After that, build a
shipyard (I used dwarves to blast through the rocks :-) ) anda transport. Put about 3 or 4 dwarven
demo squads with a few decoy units, and then send the transport full speed. This way the battleships
won't sink them. Then just run flat out and demolish the dragon roosters. I did this one by one, one on
each side. I thought the aim in this scenario was to concentrate on the dragon roosters and not the
portal. Coz once the dragons are gone there is NO resistance.
Guaranteed to work.

The Dark Portal has ALOT of hit points so you should be
patient. But when I doubt I always use my secret weapon: DEMOLITION
DWARVES!! They'll do more damage on the Portal than anything else!!
Aren't those dwarves so cute? DWARVES READY!!!!
The hardest part for me in this game was taking out all the dragons. I used
the battleships to start to take out the towers and catapults. I used
transports to deliver knights and catapults to help, too. Once that was
done, I set up a small town and upgraded my archers as soon as possible.
Archers, mages are your best bet to help with dragons early. If you have
problems, build guard towers to help out. You can't rely on extra troops
really early cause you need time to build farms first. There aren't
many ogres really... I think or 3-4. I took them out w/o any real damage
at all.
Once you have enough archers/mages... your pretty safe to build up a regular
army to take out the eastern town. The onslaught of dragons eventually ends.
Learn to use catapults/transports as decoys so you can kill the dragons.
Fireball spells work wonders.
Don't worry about a shipyard until you take over the eastern town. Use
a few griffons to take out the naval forces. There aren't many battleships
but there are a few submarines and juggernauts.

took me several tries. but once you clear the beachhead.
starting mining the gold and do everything you can to avoid
venturing north until you have enough guard towers to fend off
the dragons and enough men to overwhelm your opponents
I really don't know what the problem with this is. I built six gryphons and a
pack of knights and wiped out everything on portal island rather easily by
rotating the gryphons around, always sending the two worst damaged back to the
paladins for healing. No problem. I killed everything on the portal island and
then turned on the portal. It took five of them (one got unlucky just before the
last enemy unit fell) a while but the portal got wasted. I've seen a friend do
this level with a second shipyard and a transport boat. It took no time at all.
He landed two ballistas and a stack of archers after softening up everything with
four gryphons. The ballistas and archers made a short work of the survivers and
buildings and took out the portal quickly with some reinforcements (archers &
paladins) Again no problem.

Not a bug. The portal is a "neutral" entity, much like the sheep and
pigs that wander around. Therefore, an explicit attack is needed,
rather than an implicit RMB-click.

Although I already found various solutions posted in this newsgroup ...
here are my 2 cents.
First thing I did was to destroy the 2 northern towers on the
south-western shore (yep .. it is the only entrance). It took all my
cannonfodder (battleship and destroyers), because of the massive catapult
and tower attacks. Nevertheless ... there was now a small piece of
ground, where I could land my troops without getting under heavy fire 8-)
from the first moment on.
As you may have experienced: taking out the rest of the towers and the
guarding troops in the landing zone is quite easy. But don't waste your
archers for it. You will badly need 'em later on.
You know, there are two gold mines. After the landing zone was save I
took over my peasants and archers. You shouldn't try to kill all the
ogres and to destroy all the buildings in the "corner" at this point.
Most of them will wait for you to come near and won't attack you as long
as you stay away from those buildings. I built a townhall and started to
mine the gold of the smaller mine. Then I only built barracks, a
lumbermill and the smithy. First of all you should spend you gold on
upgrading you archers (arrow strength and all the ranger features).
As someone else already mentioned: 4 to 6 rangers ("appleshooters" of
course 8-) ) can kill a dragon before it can breath fire the second
time ! Bulding a lot of towers is (to my mind) nonsence, coz those
DeathKnights will destroy most of 'em with their spells before you are
able to intervene and those rangers kann kill those just as easily !
Upgrading your armour and weapons at the smithy will help as well, so
that you can "hack" your way to the second (and richer) gold mine without
suffering from to much losses !
From time to time there will be now a dragon to defeat, but with a bunch
of archers it is no problem, so you can start to build and upgrade
without getting disturbed too much.
Now it will be a good choice to build 2 or 3 griffin riders. Why ?
Right on the other corner of the map (means: right *grin*) you will find
a nice little orcish town guarded by a lot of ogres, some axe-throwers
and some catapults. But why use the front door ? 8-)
Most of the enemies are triggered to a special building or simply
to anything in their sight. But luckily, there aren't too many
axe-throwers and NO towers, so if you took out the small ammount of
axe-men .. well, no one will be left to even hurt your griffons. Build 2
or 3 more to speed up the massacre and rip 'em off. I did not lose even
one ground unit and got a third and rich gold mine.
Besides: you may have found another (smaller, 15k gold or something)
gold mine behind the rocks to the north, directly on the shore. So why
don't you just build 4 or 5 dwarfs and blow a way through the rocks ?
I did so and none of my peasants got unemployed during the time the
griffons did their "job".
Well ... the rest of the story is told quickly.
There will be enough gold now to build some more archers to keep the
dragons away, to build 2 or 3 squadrons of griffon riders and maybe some
paladins to heal 'em. With those griffons you should first destroy the
dragon breeders on the first "circle" (take one out, go back and heal,
get the next ...) and maybe the ships.
Note: You don't really need to build any ships in that level !
I just built them for fun *blink*.
Last thing to do is to destroy the portal.
And .. yup .. it can be done as well with the griffons.
As well as just right-clicking on the portal does not work, left-clicking
on the attack button and another click on the portal surely does !
Just speed the game up (quite a piece of stone to burn) and wait for the
nice sequence at the end.
Besides: The last orc-level will be easier and of course I wiped out
those human weaklings first *grin*.
Have fun with this great game !

I cant recall this level very clearly But I beleave I had to blow
appart a wall, build a shipyard, Blow apart anothe wall and then bring
my people in on a transprot. then kill the protal.
P.S. To blow appart walls use those little men you can build from the
same place as your flying machine.
I did that with only 4. I lost one in the process though. The death
knights were a snap. Even the demons weren't that bad. But it was
taking too long, so I landed 4 mages casting blizard to speed things up.
I had contructed a Mages Tower near the NE oil patch, on that little
island. Used the mages I built there, along with two guard towers to
keep the dragons at bay until the dragon building was toast. ALWAYS
research Polymorph in a level with dragons. 200 Mana and POOF, kills a
dragon in one shot, at pretty good range.
BTW, what kind of units will Exorcism affect? I don't have the manual
handy.

The best thing to do with the gryphon riders is to destory all the boats and
any land forces. Don't attack the portal or the demons.
When you finished all the land forces off then line up about 10 archers along
one of your shores then put the riders off to the side somewhere.
Then send up one rider to where the demons are then when some follow you lead
it to your archers.
Your archers will finish of the demons is one shot each if they are upgrade
to the max.
This is how I did it. And it work fine. Once the demons are gone send up
the riders to destory the portal.

What I did is load up my 3 transport with my most powerful units and took
the ships and transport over let the unit out and let the computer do the
attacking your units with attack anything that attacked them so just sit
back and relax or panic which ever but this has worked for me and a
friend. Also make sure the battleship and destroyer are in range they
will help you out as well.

I think the problem was that you have to click on the attack button and
then the portal since it not a red boxed item (enemy). If you
right-click it, your people won't attack. It took me a while to figure
that one out. I was so used to just selecting a group of soldiers and
right-clicking on what I wanted them to pound, I forgot about the other
way to do it!!

This is pretty much how I did it as well. Except I landed the Knights
and Footman on the southern part of the shore, and used the ships to
attach the northern part. Although my ships took heavy damage, My troops
didn't.
You don't need a land assault. You don't even need many griffons. I took
out most of the demons with a flying machine.
Send in a gnome to taunt the 2 death knights. It's easy, they have short
tempers. They'll start throwing whirlwinds at you. If maneuver in and out,
the whirlwinds will tear apart the demons, who just sit there looking
confused.
The portal isn't technically and enemy object. You can tell by noting
its not in a red box or by going to the warcraft ii editor and noting
its listed as a neutral building (along with gold mines, etc).

Thats exactly it. Everyone got so used to this new WC2 interface they forgot
about their keyboards. I use the keyboard all the time coz its quicker to click
on something and hit two keys with my free hand than drag the mouse around (got
a cool track ball now which is easier but keyboard is still quicker) It took me
about ten seconds to work out why the gryphons weren't attacking the Portal
after I right clicked on it. Not a problem. Its a problem but not a big one. I
still think Blizzard could have made it an enemy structure like everything else.
Anybody know why this wasn't the case?

Same with me, though I didn't forget about the 'other way' - still retain all my

Playing the Humans...
Yes, I finished the game by fighting my way by air and sea into the
middles waters access. On the shore adjacent to the middle ring, build a
shipyard and a few more transports. Be sure to have a considerable force
of Gryphons and mages. Send one gryphon over to lure the Daemons parked
just over the portal back to land where your mages can cast their
Blizzard spell (Most powerful indeed.) Once the daemons are cleared, you
can land and attack from the sea. You will need a good amount of
paladins to heal yourselves...GOOD LUCK!

ALl I had to do was take out the cannon towers with the ships, land my
guys at the same time (minus the archers), secure the SHORE, not take out
the whole ogre base as that would destroy to many of my troops. Build
town hall, barracks and farms quick. That gold mine at the south shore
has plenty of cash in it to build enough to take out the ogres comfortably.
While building this offense, place your remaining troops (which should be
about 10) just above the mine. This will keep the ogres from sending
anything. Meanwhile build up more troops, clobber the remaining ogres
and their buildings and just start building up your offense. You can wipe
out the other base with 2 or 3 well planned in and out attacks by the
paladins. Ie; send 9 guys in, kill just a couple of baddies, pull out, heal,
send them back in.
Ships are almost useless. I built 2 battle ships and took out the whole
navy. Built a couple of birds to get rid of the demons and then landed
in force to wipe out the portal.
The whole level took about 45 minutes....
I think that you might have a bug in your copy of the game. I took out
the towers and catapults with ships and ballistas and then landed my
other troops. The six archers even survived three dragon attacks before
the first one died. But the presence of six archers (and ulimately ten
archers and six guard towers) certainly didn't stop them from attacking.
I've seen the computer player get into some wierd loops before. On the
previous level, a transport dropped off three ogres onto my mainland.
Rather than attacking me, they just ran in a tight circle around each
other while my ballista leisurely picked them off. I have to wonder if
something similar (software-wise) happened to you when you played that
level.
