Is it just me, or does RTW have a cheaper feel to it?

The green highlights under each individual unit, for example. The speed at
which units move. It simply feels cheap. That's the best word I can use to
describe what I felt when I first played it. It seems like they forgot what
made MTW special, and are catering to a dumber crowd, somewhat. (i.e. more
people) Sure, the graphics and unit motion look nice, but that's about the only
upgrade I can see RTW has over it's predecessor -- and it doesn't come close to
offseting the unneeded and idiotic changes that were made. I give this game a 6
of 10; whereas MTW was an 8 or 9.

Turn them off. Here's how: Find the preferences.txt file in your RTW folder.
Search for "DISABLE_ARROW_MARKERS:FALSE" and set it to "TRUE". That's all.

Slow'em down. Here's how: Find the "descr_battle_map_movement_modifiers.txt"
file in your RTW/Data/ folder, make a backup of it and then replace it's
text with this:

grass_short 0.66
grass_long 0.66
sand 0.66
rock 0.66
forest_dense 0.5
scrub_dense 0.66
swamp 0.66
mud 0.66
mud_road 0.66
stone_road 0.66
water 0.4
ice 0.33
snow 0.5

Now the movement of your troops on the battlefield should look and feel a
lot more realistic. If you still don't like it, well I guess you can alter
the file to your own liking.

Try out the above changes and see if you don't like at least the battles a
bit more than before, I sure did. Check out http://www.twcenter.net/ and
http://www.totalwar.org/ for mods. I'm personally running the RTR mod from
http://www.rometotalrealism.com/.

Well, they're the not catering enough to that crowd, because I'm playing on
the easiest setting and am quite capable of losing battle horribly.

I really need a true "For Braindead Morons Only" difficulty setting, like
Dawn of War's Easy setting, which it must be impossible to lose 1 on 1
against the AI.

Thanks for the information, Alfred. Gameplay is much improved. It now feels
more like MTW.

I find the battles incredibly easy. Either I'm too good, or the game isn't
difficult. Regardless if I'm outnumbered, I generally win easily.

What I find particularly annoying, is that I can't control reinforcements.
Spending the resources to build armies, and having them gain experience through
multiple battles, only to watch them wasted (or at least not used as
efficiently as the player would), was a rather large mistake made by the
developer. AI control of reinforcements is a major drawback to this game.

When the battle begins, you can choose which units will be on the
front and which will be reinforcements. Reinforcements come in at any
time a unit leaves the field.

"Getting the hang of it" is generally the big issue with these kind of
games. I haven't played RTW yet, but I had real problems with my first
few battles in MTW, while nowadays I can slaughter whole armies with a
single unit of Boyars. Same goes for lots of strategy games. I can't
get less than a decisive victory in PG anymore either.

I'd hoped they'd give the player a bit more control than in MTW, but it
sounds like that's not the case. What I generally do in MTW, is make sure
I have all my arbalesters en heavy infantry on the field, while keeping
the majority of my cavalry in reserve. A little bit of cavalry in the
main force is all you need, whereas slow infantry reinforcements will
take forever to arrive.

Better still is ofcourse to have a main force that is able to defeat
the entire enemy force without help from reinforcements. I recently
had a big battle of 2000 Russians against 3000+ Mongols, and my
main force slaughtered them while the reinforcements ran. Never needed
to call in any of my own reinforcements.

The realism patch for Rome Total War makes the whole game tougher. Certainly
the Romans no longer have an easy task ahead.
