It's as much your fault and the rest of the BC3K flamers' fault as
it is his, Mark. You seem like a fairly intelligent guy...can't you
stop perpetuating this crap through the newsgroup? The rest of us are
sick to death of having to wade through endless new BC3K threads.

Well I've been in this newsgroup for months, and this stuff didn't start
until recently (at least not in the huge amount it's coming in now). If
it's not about the game, why are you concerned about it? You have
nothing to gain by arguing with the people, but you do stand a chance of
losing something; a person new to this group who has never heard about
you before and sees these posts will judge you solely on what you write
here. It probably won't even be conscious. I found myself doing that
exact thing, which is why I started asking questions.

No, I've read 'em all. I just don't believe that it's necessary. If
you want to defend yourself, don't open yourself up to more flames by
showing how pissed they make you (or seem to make you). Flames are
similar to the prank phone call. If you get pissed, people are gonna
keep doing it. If you ignore it, people will get bored. (You can even
carry the analogy further: Both are a waste of time. But I digress.)

How long do you think people would do this till they figured out you
wouldn't post anymore of your wonderful flames and find someone else to
pick on?
> ...and all I did was write a game.
No, if that's all you did, this wouldn't be a problem. You started
replying to people with nothing better to do than try to draw a response
out of you that would entertain them. Whoops, gotta go...

Jealousy? Of a guy who can't make a decent game? If BC3000 would have
lived up to 1/4 of what you were espousing, I'm certain most people would
have been fairly impressed. Until that day, all your grandiose claims and
finger pointing (It was all Take2's fault! Boo hoo hoo), amount to squat.
Most long time gamers have read about you and your fantastic claims
over the years, and whether it's all the media's fault or not for
slanting against you, their comes a point when people just don't care
anymore. You screwed up plain and simple, and though, we the masses, who
keep people like you employed are not aware of all the facts, it
certainly "seems" like you're afraid to shoulder any of the
responsibility. You make a mistake, you shoulder the blame, you learn and
move on. We all have to carry our own water, you should as well.
Look at the most successful game houses and producer/designers out
there, for every one "hit" there have to be at least 20 games that are
merely average or fail completely. You don't hear any of these guys
crying about how hard done by they were.
After all, with all the claims you've made over the years about how
your game will be THE game, how can you be at all angry at the people who
forked over their hard earned cash to not only feel let down, but totally
ripped off. The greater the expectation, the greater the let down. Why
not be smart and go underground, build the best dame game ever there was,
than spring it on the unsuspecting public who has no pre-conceived
notions of what a great game it's supposed to be. Hell use a nom-de-plume
so no one knows it's you and you'll have an honest chance of really
wowing them.
I don't care if you have 10 doctorates, until you can produce a game
that'll turn me into a rabid junkie for it, like the guys at id,
Activision, etc. do, than all you're doing is blowing hot air.

I agree with Lucas 100%. I've been lurking in this newsgroup for about
three months and haven't posted a thing until now. I have never heard
of BC3K, but it is un-fathomable (is that a word??) to me that a game
designer would attack people and potential customers in that manner
that Mr. Smart has. I understand that he had been provoked, but Mr.
Smart should have the intelligence to bite his tongue and not respond,
or at least respond in a civilized manner. Regardless of what people
say to him - personal or not - he just HAS to realize that he is going
to offend people and deter them from buying/supporting his game.
That is exactly what happened with me. I will NEVER buy a game written
by Derek Smart because I simply do not want to give my hard earned
money to someone who tells people he would like to piss in their
mouth. I dunno, call me crazy......
I just find it amazing that Mr. Smart, who seems incredibly busy
fixing his game has so much time to spend here, including appending
together a two *THOUSAND* line post. It boggles the mind.
Yes let's stop these BC3K threads.. much better to let the
newsgroup get inundated with threads about PC Gamer getting
bribed and about how crap games magazines are.
You don't have to read the messages..
(ever heard of a killfile or a threaded news reader?)

I've pretty much stopped, but I'd advise you to use a killfile. Telling
people to stop posting never works.
Besides, didn't I see you posting some off-topic political stuff in
response to Cleve? There are politics newsgroups for that kind of thing.
