I have III, AB, SOD installed correctly--in order and with all patches.
I've played numerous user maps with no difficulty. However, when I try
Kid Heretic it complains about an invalid file in the scenario selector.
If I try to open either Kid Heretic or Run With the Devil in the AB map
editor, I get "Invalid map file version. File version = 28. Current
version = 21."

If anyone can provide some insight on this, I'd be grateful.

It means the map you are trying to load was created with a newer version
of Heroes than what you are running. Maybe you're missing a patch or
running the wrong executable?

He's running the wrong executable. He *said* the AB map editor. Kid
Heretic is a Shadow of Death map - it uses things like the special
terrains which weren't available at all in AB. I don't know about Run
with the Devil - but likely it's the same thing.

Kid Heretic will give a funny message in place of the normal scenario
description when you try to load it up because there are fewer heroes on
the map than the game likes. I'd forgotten about this ... but it's
mentioned in the readme file that should come with the map. Just start
playing the map anyway; it will run fine!

You're right, thanks. I was confused by the names of the executables.
I know it's odd, but I never even tried running the one named h3maped
since I assumed it was for the original. What with the AB editor being
named h3bmaped, I was expecting something like h3smaped for the SOD
version. Did the original III not come with an editor? I only have
those two editors after installing all three products.

Shadow of Death never shipped as an expansion - it came bundled with the
original H3 (but if you want Armageddon's Blade as well, you either buy it
separately or in Heroes3 Complete). I think this explains why they
happily overwrote the old editor etc.
