Stardock have just released this update for Sins of a Solar Empire.

As its name would indicate its focus is on increasing your ability to
defend your space with the inclusion of starbases and many other things.

The big draw back is that you have to pay for it, $9.95US (15 AUD) and
that you have to install it through Impulse. Which is _almost_ enough
like Steam to make me refuse to use it. The only difference is it
doesn't stay running all the time like Steam wants too, isn't required
to actually play the game and doesn't pop up with "news" (read:
advertising spam) at random intervals.

Plus I've been buying Brad's games since the start and he hasn't let us
down quality wise yet imo.

I'm downloading it now and will report on it when I get the chance.

One thing to note; this isn't a patch as such so they aren't charging us
to get updated products. They just released patch 1.15 which has a
multitude of changes and fixes as well. Entrenchment is a content addon.

Link and blurb from website follows:

a) I really like impulse. Not having to mess around with CD/DVD and
no DRM. Install on my desktop and my laptop. Win.

b) I sugglest checking out "Gamers with Jobs" podcast this week
http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/43967 They talk with one of the
Ironclad devs about Entrenchment. I thought it was an excellent
discussion.

I have SINS, but I haven't really gotten into it. I can't carve out
enough time to play it and thus each game I start I have to reclimb
the learning curve. Learning curve != fun. I don't know if I'll get
Entrenchment as it sounded like you have to KNOW the game to benefit
from the mini expansion.

Anyway, let us know...

I bought Entrenchment about a week ago. I started a medium sized
random map back then and still haven't finished it yet. So far the
addition of the starbases and the improved visuals are the most
drastic changes. Investing in starbases is expensive, but they can be
customized to provide a wide range of functions and tailored to your
empire's playstyle. They aren't neccessarily game experience altering
changes, but still welcomed. I can't really say if it justifies the
$10 price hit. But since I've gotten so much enjoyment out of the
base game, I don't feel bad about throwing these guys another $10.

I think it does. And are gamers so cheap that they grumble over such
a minor expansion pack price!? $10 is less than I spend at a
restaurant for a meal that takes me 10 minutes to eat!

I know you're not griping. :-) Some people do gripe over it. I think
they are clueless and they bug me. :-)

Good. Me too. :-)

Gamers definately aren't cheap. Some of us drop $500 everytime NVidia
adds an S or X suffix to whatever their latest graphics card is.

Gamers do spoil easily. Other companies have had "content patches"
that adds free stuff in the game. Then we think, well why can't
everyone do that? When in reality, it was stuff that was probably
originally supposed to be released with the game but didn't make it
for whatever reason.

The Entrenchment add-on really seems to be development that happened
after Sins went gold. Therefore required someone to do the modelling,
rebalancing, and coding for the new features and units. Maybe
companies with deeper pockets (Relic) can afford to do that, but
Ironclad isn't exactly rolling in dough.

Very good point, making it all the worse that people want software for
free or next to free. :-/

According to Stardock SoaSE sold very well. I wouldn't be surprised if
Ironclad rolls at least in cereals.
