I returned the game because of bugs, but I was able to defeat the tough, evil
guys in the one game I played. (At least I think I did, I got stuck in a dead
end on the plot tree and never had a finale.) The trick is to attack their
killer fleet with everything you have early when you have a significant tech
advantage and before it can get too large. Though you will be heavily
outnumbered and will lose most of the ships you have built, you should be able
to pull it off at one point. Then keep pruning their fleet to prevent it from
getting out of control again (this is tedious). I took it down after I had my
first largest size ship (Battleship?) built. This is the only way because the
enemy's strategy is to keep increasing one fleet to humungous size until it is
unstoppable, which you probably already know. Soon after you have the
battleship you will max out in ship tech and the enemy will be catching up to
you in tech and outproducing you. If you haven't tackled their fleet by then
it's game over.

Bonne Chance.

Yes, I tried but I alway discover them too late as they are strong.

Thanks, fortunalty I find the "trick" few hours after my post.
Here it is ( jump to another message if you prefere to learn yourself: this
is easy despit it took hours to me to find it)

Use the "manipulator' ( french name) in your ship to take control of
opponent ship. Thinks become very easy now.

Happy gaming

Well, the drawback with this is... you can't research the "ship manipulator"
yourself. If I recall right you can trade this tech from the Iberon Empire
(they have some other cool techs as well, like the awesome destructor ray
(900 firepower))

Best way to get anywhere fast in this game is to secure as many planets as
fast as you can. You can iniate one with your starting colonization ship,
and you should build more colonization ships azap and spread out. Pick your
planets with care, high productive planets should be taken first, use the
less productive ones for research and trade. One nice thing is to pick a
fight with your neighbours early, snag a couple of planets from them then
make peace with them :) Then start to build up your fleet, but don't
overproduce, try keep a balance, you need your planets to grow as well. When
you get the cruiser then dump the corvettes and destroyers since they will
slow your fleet down. Consentrate on Cruisers and fighters. Make several
models of your cruisers (and battleships). The autodesign is easy but you
can get a nice mix designing your own ships. Like have combat cloaking on
the ships with the most powerfull weapons (with longest recharge time).
Don't equip lasers and such on these ships though, since the cloaking
doesn't work when the ship is offensive. Hireing mercenaries is cool, but on
the later stages in the game don't hire someone with a ship that doesn't
have MK 5 hyperdrive. Oh, and btw: Attack is the best deffence sometimes :)
don't wait for the enemy to grow.
