Is there any way to get two pc's to connect modem-to-modem by just linking
them directly with a phone cord? (like a null modem cord) Not everyone has
an empty serial port to use a null modem.

If you have two lines, you could hook each computer up to a line and call
the other line.

I'm not aware of any way to do it directly, but I'm not an expert or
intermediate for that matter.

I have had people tell me it is impossible and others tell that they have
done it.
Never tried it myself, don't want to risk burning up two modems.
You can buy cards that support many com ports tho.

hmmm if you get one to go atdt and the other machine to go ata then you
should theoretically be able to a connection
ummm ya need both to the "line" to stay open though.. ie so they can hear
the squealching.. but dunno if you can do that or if it works that way..
easiest way to test that is to hook 2 phones to each other by the wall
cord.. (and not have them into the actual phone line)

I play WCII under Win95, and if I want to play multiplayer, I set my laptop
next to my friends computer, run Direct Cable Connection over a parallel
cable (like DOS InterLink), insure IPX is setup on both machines, and
choose networked IPX game inside WCII. You have to be a little technical
to set it up, but it works nicely.

wires that are crisscrossed. I asked people that question to, and thats
what they said. A null modem cable is cheap though. Can you not
connect Warcraft 2 null modem? I always play that over the null modem.
It's rad!

WE DONT HAVE AN EXTRA EMPTY SERIAL PORT TO USE A NULL MODEM ON!

The only option left really for us to use in direct connects are the parallels?
But if someone would be kind enough to tell us how to connect using
parallels, I'd really appreciate it!

I thought it was really simple, just hook up both sides w/ the cable and
voila! you're done...but then my gf starting messing w/ the win95 and theres
an icon for setting up Direct Cable Connects. wha??! what's it supposed to do?

any help mucho appreciando,

Last year I bought a Head2Head cable which is like 30 feet long and have
serial and parallel plugs on each end. Maybe that will let you connect via
your parallel port? The cable included, among other things, a demo of
warcraft 1 (with only grunts and archers). Retro warcraft play! :) Oh well.

Here's how to do it...

Use a T-Connecter so that both outputs terminate in a single phone plug. Plug
this into the wall socket. Set one computer to 'answer mode'. (It will do a
linecheck, then wait) Set the other computer to dial any single digit. Dial.
It does a linecheck, then dials. As soon as it has dialled the digit, remove
the plug of that computer from the T. Then use another phone and phoneline to
dial into that phoneline. Hang up after one ring. Plug the 'caller' computer
back into the T and disconnect the plug from the wallsocket. Sorted!
Questions? (Similar to this works well for me here in the UK for using a fax
machine to 'send' a fax to the computer.)
