I've read a little about the Close Combat series, but isn't that rather old?
Would it even be able to run on Windows XP on a modern computer? Are there
alternatives?
I don't specifically want real-time, but I find it difficult to imagine how
turn-based could work, without reducing the number of units to too few...

I think Matrix updated CC.

The Panzergrenadier series from Avalanche Press is quite good. Of
course, it's a board game.

There are none that are pure infantry. These should all interest you
though.

This last one is pure turn based so may not interest you.

The "Combat Mission" series use a system where combats are divided into
1-minute phases - commands are given to squads by each commander and the
outcome determined by an AI engine which isn't half bad. Your opponent
can be another player head-to-head, by email, or another AI engine on
your PC. You can view the outcome of your orders from almost unlimited
POVs. The first 3 games (Beyond Overlord, Barbarossa to Berlin and
Afrika Korps) are WWII, the most recent (Shock Force) is more
contemporary. I used to play Avalon Hill's "Squad Leader" and this is
every bit as good, on the PC.

Dave
LOL, that's the only one that does. :-)

Thought you wanted real time? The only one on my list that has a RT mode is
Combat Mission:Shockforce. The others have a wego system which is almost
like RT but done in time slices. Sqaud Battles are TB and they have more in
that seires than the Vietnam one. I only pointed to that one because I have
it and it is the first in the series. The problem with HPS games is you
have to have them ship you a copy and they are expensive. You could go
download PC:Kharkov and be playing in less than an hour after purchase. I
really suggest you go get it now as I don't think it will dissapoint you.
Only copy protection is serial number.
I'm confused by his thinking that real-time makes it _easier_ to control
more units. That's the complete opposite of reality.

History Channel is showing 'Ice Road Truckers' as part of their
"American Originals" brand of shows.
'Ice Road Truckers' is a show about Canadian truck drivers.
(Sig life is directly related to amount of commentary received about
it.)

Maybe because in most RT games you can lasoo multiple units and have them
all attack/retreat etc. RT is good only if it has pause and command feature
IMO and there are very few RT tactical games that have any realistic unit
data attached to them. They are mostly just based on hit points and that's
it.
Yes. The only way I can see that turn-based can work, at a reasonable speed, is
if the units are fairly autonomous, especially if not given orders, or if they
can be given conditional ordes such as "shoot if you see enemy uniforms".

I would want realism and lots of detail, yes. When playing traditional RTS games
I don't bother much with combat anyway, preferring the focus on economy and base
building. So this would be something very differet. Plus, I'm curious about and
intersted in infantry tactics, so I figure I could learn a little from a good
tactical game.

Well, all the games I have listed are your best options so it's up to you
to go buy one or two now.
If your interested in learning tactics, Tacops was written by a USMC
Major.
Buy, or download the demo?

For the record, close combat is pretty good, IMO. I'm sure it could be
obtained for squadoosh. Got a lot of legs out of CCIV.
Cheers,
Rod.

Combat Mission:Shock Force has a demo but it is a bit dated compared to the
latest version so don't expect it to represent the final product. It had
quite a lot of bugs when it was released but it is relatively bug free now.

Some of the other games have demos too so you will have to go look for them
with google.
