All the talk of Civ3 led me to buy Civilisation 2: Test of Time from the
bargain bin. I'd played my son's Civ2 before and thought I was buying
the same thing. However, when I loaded up the game it seemed
graphiczally different to what I remember (the rules and gameplay seem
the same). For a start, I can't find the videos of the council advisors,
which I used to find hilarious. Nor did there seem to be a throne room.
The map was similar, but rather fuzzy and the unit icons much less sharp
than I recall. Can anyone shed any light? is there any way to modify
test of time to be just like Civilisation 2?
Thanks for any advice
Simon

Modify it?

Um...you can try to take it back and try to exchange it...but that's it.....

You want CIV2, Multiplayer Gold Edition

One of these two sites should have a graphics mod-pack that will restore
Civ2-style terrains and units. For wonder movies, the throne room, and
advisors, you need to buy an older version.

Sorry but TOT is a notorious disgrace: no advisers, no throne room, no
wonder videos and no point.
PS. Your also right about the graphics, they arn't as sharp as Civ 2's.

Yeah - serves me right for not being patient enough to wait for Civ3 to cross the pond. On the plus side, I've
been having some fun with CTP2 after the apolyton site patches - tried impossible and it was just that; very
hard is nice - I haven't been attacked yet but the passive AI seems fixed in that the AI civs fight each other
a fair amount.

Three extra versions of the game? Alpha Centauri, Sci-Fi world and Fantasy
world.

You did, well the same game anyway, just without the frills.

They are the same, but the graphics have been "improved", they're 16-bit
rather than 8-bit.

True. I don't know why they left them out, but they're not essential to the
game, hardly ever looked at them myself.

In terms of resolution, the graphics are exactly the same size. However the
original graphics use a much smaller range of colours, so they stand out
more. They've used more colours in TOT in order to get a more realistic
"blend". Unfortunately they blend too much, and the units blend in to the
terrain. The units could do with being "sharpened" like you'd do to a photo
in a graphics program.

You can get sharpened and original versions of the graphics here;

http://coc.apolyton.net/graphics/terrain.shtml

Be sure to get the patch too;

http://coc.apolyton.net/utilities/index.shtml

Although the frills have been left out, you do get three extra variations of
the game, in addition to the original, so in terms of gameplay it's much
better value for money.

But the sad thing is I bought it for the frills! As far as I know, they have
gone in Civ3 and I was feeling a little nostalgic. Plus the ToT graphics seem
so inferior to the original Civ2. Put the two together, I can't face playing
it. A total waste of my money.

Fair enough.

Get the graphics updates from the sites that were mentioned, they restore
the original graphics.

lol

Why not just buy the original, then you'll get videos, advisers, throne
room, clearer graphics and a ton and a half of users made mods and
scenarios.

Because of the three extra game variations?

Irrelevant frills. Fun and first but pointless once the novelty wears off.

See above.

That's a good point. But you can also get mods and scenarios for Test of
Time that use the new features, like multi-layered maps and different
terrain, units etc. Room for lots more user-defined units too.

Frills? No, these affect gameplay. Not frills. That said, both TOT
and Civ2Gold are cheap. Get both.
