(To the thread originator -- I suppose id would not characterize
Quake as easy... nor does AoE, with all its flaws, strike me as
a trivial achievement, either.)

Yup. Quake's source code was released by id Software, not by
indy [cr|h]ackers, so that's why it's available. id also, IIRC,
released Doom and Heretic code (although not the .wad, methinks).
MSFT, on the other hand, has little incentive to do so -- AoE/AoK
aren't *that* old, they're still producing add-ons (Conquerors),
and so forth. I see little reason that they'd release the code
anytime soon. I don't believe they've even opened DOS 2.1 yet.
Perhaps the thread writer should search for any of the ongoing
collaborative gaming projects (there are a LOT of people with
ideas, but who need volunteers who can program, design, draw,
and so forth).
For an example of a free RTS, consider checking FreeCraft
(http://FreeCraft.org), which was originally designed to clone
WarCraft II. Apparently, they now specify that it runs on
Win32 platforms as well as Unices. The file
'clone-000402-complete-win32.exe'
is labelled as including binary, source, and all for Win32, so
it may be quite useful.

I have no idea how good it is, but it might be a place to start.
If Microsoft's history is any example, the Age of Empire source code
should be available sometime between never and the end of time.

Check out my videogame and PC game reviews at:

Latest Review: Army Men: Air Combat

First off, you might want to post to the comp.games.development or
alt.games.programming groups. They would probably be able to answer
your questions better.

From what I've heard, it isn't all that good. A better start for a
beginner would be Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus by
Andre LaMothe:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0672313618/o/qid=970287515/sr=2-2/103-2072182-0241458
It's a generalized book, but it'll give you what you need to know to
do top-view games like AOE.

Most likely the former... the end of time assumes they might actually
release it eventually.

Also possibly helpfull might be:
http://www.antimeta.com/projects/rts/
It's got some information on common requirements for RTS games.
I'm curious as to the combination of AOE and Quake, but the best of
luck to you. I hope you understand what you're undertaking... it's not
easy. I won't say don't try though... I couldn't stand it when I was
told to program tetris and work my way up. Instead, I've been trying
to program a space 4x for 2 years now, and I don't expect to be done
for at least another 2. Of course, I never had to do tetris, so I'm
happy.
