Hi,

Excuse me, but could someone explain why half way through the game it
is announced that Barracks are obsolete and have been sold. Then
several turns later the Military advisor complains about the lack of
Barracks ?????

> Hi,

Hello,
The barracks that get sold can not train your troups with the new
technology. Later, your advisor correctly reminds you to build barracks
that can train troops with all the latest weaponry available.
Cheerio!

Err. Well when your military technology advances your nice new troops
don't like living in those smelly old barracks so they get dismantled -
and you get some money back. Obviously the military adviser isn't going
to like there being no barracks so he moans.

Barracks are made obsolete by Gunpowder (the first time) and the second
time by Armour (I think).

It's all in the manual.

Think of barracks as a military base in general. Your civ invents
better weapons and suddenly all your 'old fashioned' military bases are
out of date. They are automatically sold off to make room (and some cash)
for building new barracks that can train units which use the new tech.

Paul,

As someone else has mentioned it's in the manual!
I do get sick of seeing people post questions that point them
out as fools or show that they've not bought the software.

Because some militaristic advances cause barracks to become obsolete..
Among those are....

Gunpowder, Conscription, and Robotics i believe.
But i may be off now.

Again RTFM

Well they should have named them like
Camps, Barracks and ??? instead of Barracks, Barracks and Barracks.
Giving them different icons and restrict the training ability of the older
versions to the older (cheaper) units (without removing them as obsolete)
would be a nice idea...

For defending against barbarians, a fortified phalanx would do the job for a long time.
'obsolete' units with price reduction (50 percent?)?
Buying warriors for 5 shields and have them upgraded to marines by Leonardo :) :)

Ok, ok, Leonardo is already too powerful...
(usually, I buy/build lots of warriors in advance and let them sit around - waiting ;-)

I beg your pardon, I have bought the software. Sorry, if due to the
fact that I'd played Civ 1 for years, I didn't read the manual again.
Thanks to everyone that gave me constructive help, to Dan all I can
say is Fuck off, didn't your parents ever tell you 'if you can't say
something nice, don't say anything.' ?

Sheesh ! It might have been nice if Barracks had been replaced, by say
'Training camps'. It just doesn't make sense to scrap barracks only to
have to replace them. Or possibly for the player to be given the
option to upgrade rather than just having them removed.

Anyway, thanks again to those who helped me out.

Paul.

So what's your problem ? If you played Civ 1 the you'll know barracks
become obsolete because it happened in that game as well. The only thing
that's changed is when.

That's pretty good going. Abuse, self righteousness and hypocrisy all in
one sentence.

Of course, CIV II represents an improvement over CIV (I) in that
in CIV II obsolete barracks are sold off, while in CIV they were
simply removed from the game.
