Hi, there:

I just finished Starlingrad and wiped out the entire 6th army and
4th Panzer. Russia compaign is tough and requires somewhat different
strategic thinking than PzG. So I would like to share my feelings with
rest of you and possibly provide and tips for the newcomers. Most of ideas
here only applies to Russia player.

At first, one of the most succesful stratege I 've used so far is
preserve my elite auxiliary units the same way as I preserve my core units.
Yes, this means I did ELITE REPLACEMENT for some of my veteran auxiliary
units. This is so different from PzG and is resonable in AG when playing
Russia. You have plenty of prestige (I have 2000 left unused so far even
after doing things above), but you core units is not strong enough to
finish what you have to finish in the early stage of the war.

The second important thing is to buy as many AD units as you can
and put them close to you artillery units. Even if these AD units won't
go along with you to the next mission, but they are so cheap and so vital
to your whole defense line. I sometimes disband some of useless infantry
in order to free some slot space for my AD. Nazi's air superiority will
be eventually eaten out by your ADs.

OK, now I 'd like to tip on each mission for the Russia compaign
up to Starlingrad:

1:) Finland: A very tough one. One trick I used to get a Major is
load one infantry on the truck and drove close to the front line but not
close to the enemy forts (I am talking about the west side of the defense
line, east side is relatively easy to take). Finn's Infantry, originally
dugged in the line, will come out and attack your loaded trucks. This
poor infantry will usually be kiiled, but enemy's infantry is alos exposed
to your artillery and lost all its entrenchment as well. Once you clear
out his infantry you can pound his forts with artillery and attck with
engineers.

2:) Poskv: You have to win a victory here in order to survive the
invasion, otherwise, you will be sent to defense Moscow in the next turn.
Your core units is not strong enough to do that yet. In order to get minor,
you have to hold all three cities east of the river. The south city is the
vital point since German will die hard to get this one first. Move most
of your units to the east of the river in the 1st turn, but remebr to
leave some units in the front line to delay enemy advance so that they
won't catch your units in retreating. Use a KV39 or KV41 to defend the city
(the south one), backed up by two arte, and as many ADs you can afford:).
DONT use infantry to defend as German's artillery will eventually wipe it
out. Concentrate your tanks near this city too to counterattack any units
trying to cross the river. Northern cities are easier to defned, you only
need some arts and ADs.

A major is almost impssible to get in this scenario 'caz you have
to take a German hold city as well.

3:) Leinigrad: A mnior in the previous mission led you to this one.
You should strive for a major here to avoid the Moscow defnese, a minor
will still led you to the Moscow.
To get a major, you will have to hold most of the surrounding cities.
. To do this, put your tank divisions in the front line, as well as your
artilleries. Don't be afraid of his air booms. Just get enough ADs to
protect your units. It's not hard to get a major here. I only lost one city
which located in the far west side of my defense line.

4:) Moscow: I didn't try it. It's hard since you have to not only
hold Moscow but also most of the surrounding cities too.
5:) Vzyzam: A major in 3 led you here. A key point to get a major
here is to preseve your elite auxiliary units. I upgrade a 3 star 12 strength
infantry in the far east city to a brige engineer and loaded with truck.
I use elite replacement whenver it's bommed by Nazi. It is this very unit
who single handed took two objective cities withou even usin support!

6:) Kharkov: A major in 5 let you fight here, otherwise, you will
go directly to starlingrad. This mission , as in history, is almost
impossible to accomplish. With clear weather, German air squards will kill
most of you artillery units, making it very difficult to attack the cities.
So, your objective is better set to give your core units as many experience
as possible and prepare for the final showdown in Starlingrad.

7:) Stralingrad: Again, key point to get major here is get ADs to
protect your arts, and also presever some 3 star auxiliary units. Another
vital point is to take enemy's air field as soon as possible, especially
the two near Starlingrad. Use your tank units in the north line to strke
as soon as possible and get that two air fields. Also, concentrate your
boomer units on that two PzVF2s. They are really trouble to your KV42s. If
you can take care of these two PzVF2s, the rest of Panzer divisions is
dead in the water. Don't be afarid your bommer will be shoot down, you
won't need them to do anything else.

Well, have fun!

Good work! That campaign really looks hard.

This tip applies to the other campaigns, too; since throughout
AG prestige isn't much of a constraint so long as you've been
doing well. In North Africa campaign I disbanded infantry
to get tanks or antitanks in more convenient locations at
the start of the scenario; and in
the American campaign I disbanded a -core- infantry early on to
get another tank- you start with an infantry-heavy group, and
the French one cant even be upgraded to an engineer.

Ack! I was proud of my Free French Mountaineers when they watlzed into
Berlin with the American/British airforce and artillery lending a helping
hand. :) It just felt ... right. Hehehe, no kidding. I kept them
frenchies real bussy. I even named them, LegViVa (Legion Viva).
