These are about as different as you can get I know, but I'm having problems
with both. I had the former on the Amiga, but it never worked properly, so a
mate gave me the PC version, which worked fine on his 486 dx33. But it won't
run AT ALL on my P200. I've tried patches, Bremze, Moslo to no avail. When I
install it it says I don't have an SVGA video card, which, obviously, is a
load of crap. If I do try to run the game, it makes my monitor go funny. It
says I need VESA drivers for my card (a Mystique 220). Trawled the net
(including Matrox site), but have come up blank! Anyone with any ideas (that
work!) will earn my sincere thanks and a copy of whatever I can lay my hands
on!

As to S3, I'm having problems with sound. I have an AWE64 (Gold version) and
every so often (especially playing as the Romans) the sound will go very
"hissy". Sometimes effects will cut out altogether. I rang Blue Byte, but
they tried their best, but weren't much help. Anyone with any ideas that
work, see above! And before anyone says anything, I DO have the latest
drivers!!

Take care

There is an option somewhere in the Pirates! Gold install to convert the
graphics to a lower resolution (16 or 256 color I think) than the ones the
install lays down. The option is actually in the Microprose install
program, but it doesn't actually do the conversion until the install is
finished. It doesn't look quite as good with the lower res, but I was able
to run it on my Matrox Millennium G200 w/o any VESA drivers. If you need
more detail, email me and I'll dig out the disks and find out what the
option is.

Pirates! Gold
Is your setting on 16 bit or 24 bit colors, might try changing to 256.
I'm pretty sure this problem has to do with Pirates! only liking 256
colors.
Have to break out my copy tonight and test it out...

Are you running Pirates! Gold through Windows? If I remember correctly it
must be ran through Windows to work.
Then you would change your colors thru the control panel.

Might want to post your questions again, this one is getting buried very
deep in the newsgroup.

Download SciTech Display Doctor at <http://www.scitech.com> , this
should help.

I just reinstalled Pirates! Gold. I installed it through Windows 95. It gave
me error messages about no SVGA drivers or card when I installed, and if I
try to start the game using the shortcut created in the MPS folder it
crashes. I then went into the Pirates! folder and clicked on piratesg.exe
and it ran fine.

I have a pentium 200 with stealth 2000 card.

Pirates! Gold has a command line switch to select a card.
Try the "generic VESA" selection - see the readme for details. It worked
for my Voodoo 3, and I had the same problem when I installed first.

As far as Pirates:Gold is concerned, 1)it needs to run in MS-DOS mode,
not in Windows, and 2)does your Video card have "built in" VESA
compatibility? If your card DOES have the built in VESA compatibility
then all you should have to do is use the generic VESA setting for
Pirates. Supposedly. The Display Doctor program will make SOME cards
(OLD ones) work with VESA reliant programs, but it is not free and it
probably won't work with your card because your card is a MS Windows
card and the manufacturer could not care less about DOS software. MS
DOS software is being abandoned. Sorry.
