Knocking over Spiderfell

Uhh, isn't the dwarven realm one of the "easy" starting positions? Maybe
try a few of the hard ones
before asking for the difficulty to be turned up? Maybe you'll find
those easy too, but
I suggest that we wait and see...

The dwarf nation IS easy.
BUT the Alamie nation, listed as HARDEST, IS hard.
You start out with zilch and have enemies all around.
Military build up is hard in Alamie,
Alliances are costly, magic build up is costly too,
and the rolling of the dice in this nation is important,
especially in the early turns of the game.
I'am am on turn 15 of the Alamie province and have managed two oaths of
fealty and various full alliances at the cost of becoming a one province
trade nation (instead of becoming a multiple province nation of military
exploits, as the style of play says it is the way to play this nation,
and now I'm being hassled right and left by avanil and spiderfell and
five peaks. This province is challenging because each turn and action
really is important. Adventures and battles have to be played out,
especially the adventures, I've saved and resaved about every of the 15
turns, and am stuck at about 150 pts. now....
Anyway, this alamie province is tough. But its fun too.

Hi Mark- I'm playing Alamie too. I gave away one terriotry at the start
(to the people just E-
they have a level-6 territory you can trade with)
spent a turn or 2 building guilds and trade routes, ruling up
territories, I then
had enough gold to buy a second permissive alliance for mroe trade.
Its now turn 12 or so and Ive just about finsihed conquering Five Peaks
and have bought an
aliance with the people to the W so I can invade Rhoube.
I havent yet hit Spiderfell but Avanil just declared war.
Since Mhoried and I are doing well, I'm thinking I'l be ok.
What do you see as the benefits of getting the stronger alliances in
this case?

The AI in Birthright really isn't up to the task - but with so many
dang ways to gain power and control over domains, can we really
expect a brilliant AI? Hopefully, when they make the sequel,
they'll have the budget and support (forget Kings Quest XX, The Happy
Bouncy Blonde People,
Ken n' Roberta!) to make the Gorgon as maliciously intelligent
as he should be. =)

I've beaten the game about 5 times - 3 on easy level, and once both on
medium and difficult settings. The hardest game, for sure, was when I
played as Tuornen. Other countries have a great deal of holdings in
Tuornen, and they really love to get together and stomp on you. I found
it kind've odd when Avanil and Boeriune (arch-enemies), Ghoere, Alamie,
Taeghas, Brosengae and Endier all declared war on me - after I declared
war on the universally feared and despised Rhuobe.
A good strategy for the smaller counties with little military might is
to build holdings extensively in kingdoms that are far away from you -
trade routes on the other side of Anuire give you just as much money,
and regent you are making money off of will have to go through a buffer
state in order to stomp you. Having your own land 'clean' of foriegn
holdings is vastly more important to smaller/less militarily capable
kingdoms as well.
More later, been playing this game non-stop. It isn't perfect -
but it's really deep.
And yes, Ward spells and slow growth will help the Elves early on.
