Well, four tries now and I'm still doing something wrong. I've tried
blowing the gun/bunker to hell with my mortars.....but no luck. Then I've
tried massing my troops in the southernmost part of the map, and shooting
out that long building, popping lots of smoke, and rushing the bridge...but
that damn anti-tank gun just blows the hell out of anything I send
across...troops, etc. And forget moving my armor, it
just won't happen, my tanks die as soon as they get out in the open, in
relation to those guns.
Tactical Suggestions, folks?
Brant
Every mortar on the bunker. If it doesn't work, don't assault;
your bosses will either reinforce you or send you elsewhere.
The safety of your men is *your* responsibility. Don't squander
them, even if it means the mission is not completed.
After all, where are you with no objective and lots of dead guys?

Brant,
"Across the Aure" is my favorite battle in the original campaign set. No
doubt about it,the Germans have a strong defensive position-taking out
the 88 in the bunker is the key.
Hopefully, you'll draw at least one 81mm Mortar, since the 60mm is
useless against the bunker. Use the 81mm to pound the bunker. Try to
sneak shots with your tanks when you can,but immediately move them
back to cover. When you blow the bunker, lay some some suppresive fire on
the southern building, pop some smoke and send tanks closely followed by infantry
across the bridge. If a tank gets knocked out on the bridge, use it for cover.
If you don't draw an 81mm Mortar, abort and restart;-)
BTW,when you get done with the original battles, there are map editors,
mission creators, and custom campaigns at www.kansas.net/~snakes/index.html
in the wargaming area.

agree great game sounds really realistic love cranking up the volume
agree that mission is toughest of lot what i do is hide all my troops start
motoring the gun then move a tank across road so gun becomes visable ,seems to
give more chance of mortars hitting it. if mortars dont work you just have to
bring all tanks to road and hope you get gun before it gets you ,fair degree
of luck involved there. dont think there is easy answer to this.
by the way have you played game on internet gaming zone. its great fun

I actually played that mission twice last nite (single missions,
re-discovering the game with adjusting force strength preferences under
the custom difficulty set-up - finished campaigns months ago...). Its
definitely one of my fav missions (along with the last of St. Lo - love
them tanks!!!).
I find the motar useless (i'm impatient) against the bunker, but i
set them up so that they can pummel the buildings near the bridge (set
them up so they can see their targets- accuracy much better). I mass my
troops on the hedges near the river to pin down the german infantry and
ATs (to protect mortar groups & tanks) - you will take infantry losses.
Now everything is dealt with except the german linch pin, the '88. What
i do is set up my AT units (hopefully an 'A3) *in* the hedges on the east
side of the river (horizontally off from the '88) and start the shooting.
Both times i played my one 'A3 won the battle - maybe it was statisitics?
(once '88 did however pick off an 'A1 that wasn't quite covered from the
southern building). From there, ensure that the mortars have taken a fair
chunk of the infantry in the nearby buildings (especially the AT troops),
start laying down smoke on the west side of the river (with mortars again)
and send infantry across...
I use recon troops first, but try to muscle as many as possible
over quickly. A quick look at the building, clear any nearby german AT
troops (or suppress them with infantry/mortar fire) Then bring the tanks
across thru the smoke, and clean up the bridgehead....
My current problem is in the crossing the Aure #3.... i had a
half-track, an 'A1, 3 bazookas and 2 M5's... the germans had 3 marders, 4
Stu-G III's, a pair of half-tracks, and at least 3 AT infantry... Maybe
more... didn't get to see behind their lines... poor US infantry. :-(
I thought i could hold out until the bazookas ran out of ammo (guess they
wasted a lot of shots on the infantry - tanks showed up late to the
fight). We'll see how i do next time...
Does anyone know how to make bazookas hold their fire until
'proper targets' show up? I find moving them outta the way and then back
in when the armour arrives just gets them killed... :-(

Brant,
This mission has got to be one of the hardest. A strategy that I've used
before is:
1. All mortars fire 2 rounds of smoke in front of gun, then switch to HE
and
fire directly on gun.
Once there is a hole in the bunker wall:
2. Move all bazooka teams into firing range and have them fire at gun.
Make
sure to spread them out.
3. Move heavy MG or Heavy inf. up to support bazooka teams and fire on
bunker.
Once the gun is out:
4. Have your mortars smoke the bridge and cover any areas your getting
enemy
MG fire from.
4. Move your tanks up to the edge of the berm to fire across at the
building
and try to supress the german MG's/Infantry.
5. Send all your recon teams at fast speed across the bridge. You just
need to
capture the point at the bridge.
Once you have the bridge captured, move everyone across and into the
buildings
on the other side.
This has worked for me a couple of times, but not always!
Eric
You should try HIDING the AT unit until the proper target shows up. As
long as there are other targets for the enemy to shoot, the AT team should
be ok.
I'd like to add to the discussion on winning Across the Aure 3:
You don't **need** to cross the bridge to win. You just need to break
the German will to fight. Indeed the key is taking out the 88. I've
never had too much trouble zeroing in with all four mortar teams. Just
make sure that the 88 is up and firing before sending in the mortars. The
mortars will be useless if the gun is not sticking up firing. You'll have
to have some infantry on the southernmost hedge to get the 88 to show
itself.
BTW, I had one of my worst defeats ever in head to head playing the
Germans in Aure 3. The 88 quickly took out a not-so-well-protected tank,
so I went ahead and left the 88 up to shoot at infantry. About 30 seconds
and 5 mortar rounds later, the gun is kaput. Three American tanks get on
the road, so I move my Panzerschreck teams up to the river side of the
long building. At that moment every US rifle team appears and opens up on
my building. I am totally Suppressed as the tanks stream across the
bridge and wreak havoc. The game is over in another 2 minutes for a grand
total 5 minute game. The German withdrawal was accelerated 23 hours.
Thanks, Matt Hyra Seattle, WA
Crossing the Aure is big fun.
But for me yes use your mortar. It can take a while but sometimes you
need patience.
Put your tanks on the road to the right just under the hedge and one
between the gap
in the hedge facing south diagonally. The 88 can't hit the tanks but the
tanks can give
the guys in the buildings a rough time. Use a bazooka and a .50 to keep
the pressure at
the bunker. Now if the pounding did not kill the 88, smoke it. Smoke it
heavely and let your
reckons do the dirty job while tanks and rifles keep pressure on
everything else. Make sure
you have a reserve, but attack with at least 3 units. It will cost
lives. But with the 88
in tact you can not cross the bridge.
Try to play the Germans once to learn. Hehe. Put the 88 in the big long
building just right
behind the bunker. But mg42 in the church facing the bridge and put AT
guys in the building
south next to river. Keep a rifle or sturmgruppe guarding the buildings
closest to the bridge.
Easy shoot them up :) Playing Germans is easy in this scene.
Arno
Sound like a nightmare! But then again the bunker is not always the best
spot. Yes the south building next to the river is always under heavy
fire. But the building left of it also gives possablilities to fire at
the bridge.

Save your mortars for german troops and try taking out that nasty 88
with your anti tank personnel. I found that targeting the gun with
mortars is a waste of valuable ammo because it is enclosed in a concrete
bunker.

You have done magnificent things for the Close Combat players. You have
given them a completely open game with unlimited opportunities for
variation and expansion.
Many, many, many thanks.
