Actually, I thought the later revs were pretty decent. I hope one of the mags picks
it
up as I'd liked the demo version published previously.

Good luck on v. 2.0, Derek

Press Release Battlecruiser 3000ad FREE to the gaming public

For immediate release

February 12, 1998

Atlanta Today, in a dramatic move Derek Smart - designer and developer of
Battlecruiser 3000ad, announced in a lengthy open letter his intent to provide
Battlecruiser 3000ad, a version known as v1.01D7c, released free to the public.

In the letter, Derek describes, in his own words, many of the trials and
tribulations he's gone through in bringing this game to market and the reasons
for giving away the product just two weeks after regaining all rights to the
franchise from former publisher, Take Two Interactive Software. The mutual
release, signed just two weeks ago, marked the end of a chapter in the saga of
BC3K, possibly the most storied game in the history of the PC.

Detailing the journey from vaporware to reality, Derek addresses his feelings
on many issues surrounding his game, including his desire to see his dream
realized.

While details concerning the commercial release of the upcoming v2.0 which,
among other advanced features will support 3Dfx and Rendition accelerators, are
still up in the air, Derek reaffirms his commitment to his gamers worldwide and
concerns about an industry his company has worked so hard to contribute to.

The FREE version of the game will be available in 11 file segments from the
3000AD web site as well as several on-line sites that have agreed to host the
files for their readers. Derek has also offered gaming publications the option
to carry it on their CD issues.

At precisely 1201AM EST on February 13th 1998, the files will be available in
the cargo bay at www.3000ad.com for online sites to download and post on their

own sites. Before hosting these files, you MUST read the corresponding text
available at the link below and adhere to the conditions therein.

OK gang, now that I've not only caused a phone call from my ISP, my site is
packed to the brim. So, please try one of the Games Domain mirrior sites to
download the file. Watch for it on the cd-rom of several print magazines too!

Thanks for your support. Most print mags have already sent email saying that
they would carry it. So, wait until it shows up if you can't do a 52MB
download. btw, this is NOT a demo, it's the FULL version currently on release
and being sold in stores.

Hee hee, I think I'll wait a little longer. If the current trend is
any indication, pretty soon Mr. Smart will have to _pay_ gamers to
play his game.

Best of luck with version 2. Being a fellow developer, I'm sympathetic
to your publishing woes (granted I haven't developed something as large
scale as BC3000). I have a feeling that if the game is half a

To say that my ISP didn't find my generous gesture amusing would be an
understatement. No only did thousands people jam the site, they brought it down
on it's knees I'm told. So bad that the entire backbone has been down for over
3 hrs while they try to bring the server back up.

So, if you're trying to get the file, try one of the mirrored sites above until
my ISP is back up. I am currently uploading to Compuserve as well.

53 MB? wow. Nice gesture and all, but how soon can we expect the print mags
to carry it? Cause my 28.8 coupled with a ISP that gets unhappy often don't
bode well for DLing something that i 53 MB. Took me a week to DL the AOE

Get Go!Zilla, its free and its great. It is the only way to
download files from the net (ftp or html...)

Do a web search, I am sure you can find it, otherwise I can get

As a supporter I'm looking forward to assisting your bashing and name

not to carry v1.01D7c.

Are we going to bash and name call the whole magazine industry when/if no

I read the whole thing, folks. For those of you that don't have an hour
or two to spare :-), here's a synopsis.
Derek is brilliant, great and good. Derek is brilliant, great and good.
Derek is brilliant, great and good. Derek is brilliant, great and good.
Derek is brilliant, great and good. He has every Computer Science book
ever published. He is a super great guy to work with and know. He grew
up in England and in 1989 he was in England selling computers going to
school and working on BC3K. He has 3 degrees including a PhD. Dan
Bennet and TLM (Liam McDonald?) are evil assholes that have a grudge
against Derek (our hero) for no good reason. BC3K is the greatest most
advanced game that ever was, (however, it is incomplete and shouldn't be
reviewed by professionals). You can get the current full BC3K version
that is complete for free (55MB download). This is a gift to the world
and the gaming community that proves, Derek is brilliant, great and good.

I already have a firm commitment from PC Games (US) and I expect the same from
the other mags I've kept in touch with these past years. Don't expect anything
from PC Gamer though, unless Gary sanctions it. See, if you gamers don't
request it, they won't carry it. At least that's what Dan Bennett said last
year.

Also, John is working something out where people who don't want to download it
can send him $10 for a cd-rom of the whole thing, including intro, manual etc.

Wish you would have had these intentions two weeks ago. Would have saved

I think that the free download is a nice move. May upset your die hard

Derek didnt want to release it, but Take 2 decided the had spent enough
money on it, and drop kicked it out the door.

Derek DIDN'T HAVE to produce the patches that made it a better game. But he
did because it wasn't finished. He knew it, we knew it, and damn well Take 2
knew it. But I don't see you razing Take 2 about their policy.

So park the shit were it really belongs.

this happens to all kinds of games. after a while when they
have a sequel coming out they might release the original for free, like
Red Baron, kind of.

Same here! But why did you give the game out for free? stir something
up for V. 2.0?

I think it will be hard for people to whine about your
game now, it's free!

Thanks Derek, I am now DLing it and will give it a spin.

Just checked, I am getting it from ftp.gamesdomain.com and currently my
throoughput is 27.3KB/sec, using a P150 machine, MSIE4 and a cable modem.

Thanks again.

I should be able to DL it in about 52-54 minutes, thanks

Is the version on ftp.gamesdomain.com the 1.00 version or the 1.01D7C
version? It still seems majorly buggy. I downloaded the whole thing, and
it crashes EVERY time I try to save a game, and EVERY time it tries to
access the CommLink. The Extreme warfare is unusable because it jumps to
CommLink immediately. Am I the only one experiencing this?

I think it's a great gesture, and should at last stimulate some talk
about the game and the engine behind it, rather than the usual trash
threads we see here!

The online mags will naturally carry the game, and I'm sure Derek will
get the game onto at least some gaming mag cover CDs for those for
whom 50Mb download is a little excessive :-)

Way to go Derek!

You need the "Get Right" shareware. It can resume broken downloads, so
you can easily download overnight, or even over multiple nights (i.e.,
log on again and resume the download where it left off). I use it to
get 20-30+MB demos all the time, it works great.

Hello

Just a few simple questions for those with the correct information (ie
no spammers, no ass kissers, and no kill anything with Smart's Name on it
people).

1. Just what version is on the game site.

2. System requirements (ie processor, memory, operating
system).

3. Given the answer to number one, what changes,
enhancments, docs are included in this free download that makes
it something one would want to take the time to get.

Just trying to get to the core of the matter.

I think I explained my reasons in the file on my news site at
www.bc3000ad.com/news/gnnnews.html

It's simple, I want the game to speak for itself. Noone has to spend a dime to
check it out amidst the bad press of late '96 and early '97. I feel confident
that people will agree that the game is indeed a work of art, technological
advanced and that getting v2.0 shouldn't be an issue. I was just playing with
the 3Dfx Glide version and let me tell you this, we ain't worried. With it's
advanced feature set and graphics enhancements, v2.0 will have the gameplay
brawn and graphics dazzle to compete with anything out there. The WIN32 sequel
will be able to compete with anything coming out for Christmas '98. We remain
hopeful.

I don't think it upsets any fans, in fact, quite on the contrary because now
they won't be labeled as mindless zealots. The game speaks for itself and it
does so with pride.

That version is v1.01D7C that has been in circulation to owners since 1997. You
may have a bad download or bad install.

We are aware of a save/restore problem which only happens under obscure
circumstances (has been fixed). There is a workaround described at
www.bc3000ad.com/news/gnnnews.html

I would suggest that you re-install and read the BC3KHELP.TXT and README.TXT
files.

I don't know about an Extreme warfare mode in my game.

"In 1989 while I was in the UK where I grew up, I had an idea for a game

Cheer up, it may not be wasted money after all because you still require
to send in the original BC3K cd-rom if you want to get the V2.0 upgrade.

Heh -- at work we did a limited release today to go out to 10
customers, or at least we tried. We kept finding weird last minute
glitches that would send everyone back to their cubes to fix and
quickly test, and then when we were finally ready to burn some CDs,
the CD burner went on the fritz. It was really Friday the 13th.

Dear Monkey boy..please try to comprehend the following

The buzz word here kids is "When it came out"...so you mister master
programmer that has produced.....................what.........body
odor, ...an unusually large load of fecal material that migrated to
your cranium......you have produced WHAT.........SHIT
Did you oh holy of assholies...bother to download THE latest patch
did you see the game with said patches..with the lens flare off the
windows of ships, with the terrain maps of mars, earth, with the
stability of the game engine that is now rock solid....which fixed
what was the world's most buggiest game..and turned it into what is
now a godsend for HARDCORE strategy gamers and space sim fans.
Derek busted his balls.....to get the game up to snuff...should he
have before it was
released??? Of course...But other factors came in...and jerkwad..if
derek was such a twit/lamer that you apparently think and for all who
think HE released the game unfinished as some grand satanic plot
wouldn't he have skipped out with the iniitial loot long ago?
Look the fucking game is rock solid now with all the patches , the
manual is in adobe acrobat form at the web site, the game runs great
without any crashes, and even has the new graphical features of the
earth map , and mars that i described above...the neural net is
their...don't think so like that pc gamer asswipeT. Liam
Mcshithead..then let the game run by itself ....and just check on the
universe around you and see wars beiing fought by the other races
around you, ground attacks occurring in some planets, space wars
occurring..all without YOUR intervention.........so why the fuck were
you so fucking lame asswipe that you wouldn't get the patches and see
if you finally got your damn money's worth. The one problem i have
with
the game is that quite literally it has an awesome learning
curve..much higher than su-27 flanker has...derek has literally used
every damn shift, control, alt key combination on the dam,n
keyboard...IS THIS BAD?...NO . actually it is awesome....if you are a
flight sim fanatic ..try telling a flanker convert that their beloved
su-27 game is crap...because it has a high learning
curve....Papadoc..the rest of the flanker legions and myself will
personally drop by your house and pour marmalade over your godforsaken
ass and let the ants have their way with your butt
( sorry to involve you papadoc...but when referencing flanker i have
to go to the man that inspired me to think pink flamingo piloting, and
su-27 flanker was cool :).. hehehe..) The major problem with an
involved game, a deep game, a game with innumerable options and
possibilities , and a game like BATTLECRUISER 3000 AD , that has a
very involved attention magnet..is that you need some type of brain
to be able to appreciate its depth, to make a commitment to learning
its nuances, and for finally mastering its strategy...so there is your
problem MONKEY BOY.....you forgot to not only download the patches
for the game but also forgot to check on the systems integrity of your
own wet ware neutral net ,...

In honor of the latest BC3K development (probably one of the few ways for
Derek to get much interest in 2.0), I have composed a song for Derek Smart.
This should truly be the theme song for this latest BC3K gimmick.

This is based on Coolio's 'Gangsta's Paradise', or, my real source, Weird
Al's 'Amish Paradise'. I suggest you imagine it being sung to Weird Al's
music, this is not what one would call a serious song. And, as is usual for
a song, in some places you have to mangle pronunciation to get sound/meter
right.

And now, winner of the 1998 Allegood Award for excellence in musical satire,
we present:

Cruiser Paradise
By Kevin Allegood

'Developer', BT is slang for 'Beta Tester', fthx should be pronounced

As I surf Taco Palace
where I brag 'bout my game
I take a look at my wife and chick steps out the magazine
But that's just perfect for the Cruiser DV
You know I write Neural Net for the community
At 4:30 in the morning I'm flaming dolt,
J. Ballinger rants on 'bout race,
Kafaka an in... SULT
And I've been flaming and scamming so long that
Even S Fong Boy thinks my mind is gone
I'm a man of the game, I'm into programing
Got a thesis on my wall and Novell all scanned in
But don't cruise 'round in the ship, your box'll crash just like mine,
So tonight we're gonna party like it's two-nine ninety nine

We been spendin most our lives
Living a Cruiser Paradise
I've called the press and Usenet dykes
Living in a Cruiser Paradise
Game don't work, I won't be nice
Living in a Cruiser Paradise
You bought it once? We'll charge you twice
Living in a Cruiser Paradise

A stupid boy flamed my on the group last week
I just laughed at him, in his mouth I took a leak
I really don't care, in fact I hope he's well
Cause I'll be shovin his head up
his ass for that moussey smell.
But I ain't never flamed a poster, unless he deserved it
Good 'ol David Potter?
You know I'll just dodge it.
I never wear socks and I've got a cool pad,
And my BTs agree
My mom will still pay for me... FOOL
But my ego inflates, over all these years
Trying to understand my rants will bring you straight to tears
But the Cruiser ain't a loser
So please, those games don't compare
Though I can't keep up with tech out there.

There's no sense, no shame, no truth at all
Not a single lucid post
Like Popeye and his saying
I am who I know who I am

We been spending most our lives
Living in a Cruiser Paradise
fthx, Baz, and Bill are wives
Living in a Cruiser Paradise
The game's free 'less I charged you twice
Living in a Cruiser Paradise
How will I react? Roll some dice
Living in a Cruiser Paradise

Flamin' all the gamers, slamming on their mothers,
Ain't done the game today, go ahead and hype some others
Think you're a Commander?
Play the game with heart?
Well, more than possibly imagined
by you is how I'm Smart
I'm the nutso dev the little Clevey wanna be like
On the group playin' poor
Flamin' Take2 cause the games out the door
But don't blame me, I didn't sign it
Or else, oh gamer, I might have to trash
A Coke machine consignment

We been spending most our lives
Living in a Cruiser Paradise
We're all crazy, we think he's right
Living in a Cruiser Paradise
One day we'll all see the light
Living in a Cruiser paradise
But wait for V2, it'll sure be nice

Dammit! And I just installed NT 4 at work.

Wait, listen. I have never claimed to be pro-Derek. I have been pro-indy-
developer. I know that Derek has definitely made a fruitcake case for himself
on the usenet. But, Jesus Christ(!), look at these morons like FTHX(Baz), Bill
Huffman, Jimmy Chan.....

Derek has at least made the effort to stop the Flame War to end all Flame Wars.
Fthx still posts every day some sort of BC3k Archive crap that nobody responds
to. Cleve is the only one we can get any fun out of anymore. Cleve and Final
Fantasy Tactics. Yeah.

Erm, now that this game is free, I may have to check it out.
Monumental download anyone?

I downloaded it on 33.6 connection.... Took me 5 hours, I guess..
But it's a pretty cool game. I am surprised about production values.

I have the service here in Toronto Canada and it is $50 per month plus
applicable taxes ($7.50 - Provincial & Federal).

This gives me unlimited access, no busy signals because you are ALWAYS on.
They are aiming it at the family, so we get 5 Email addresses, and if I want

The only dark side i am seeing is the apparent atrophy, degradation,
and demyelination of some of these "professional" critics's rapidly
dwindling neurons ...see below

>Wait, listen. I have never claimed to be pro-Derek. I have been pro-indy-

Excellent point...look i have not adopted a pro -derek is the messia
zealot crusade..i just like to support underdogs, and people that do
deliver (even eventually with lots of delays as was the case with
Derek) what they promised.
These professional morons are an intresting and very bizzare enigma
People usually post in a Game News Group to either ask for help
in a game or about a game, to flame a game or a person ( like Derek
has been done to AND has done...lets be fair here...and acknowledge
all parties actions) or to praise a game , and finally to share tips,
easter eggs etc.
These very strange guys i believe DO NOT PLAY GAMES ANY LONGER
How could they have the time, with their anti -Derek crusade that is
more than what a NORMAL well balenced person's anger would encompass
they have taken this crusade on for MONTHS...AND IN SOME CASES
YEARS!!!!
what was the last damn game they played , when was the last time they
posted to a gaming NG anything about ANY game they played
recently..for that matter when was the last time they WORKED, WENT TO
A MOVIE.....MAYBE HAD MORE THAN SOLO...UHMMM ONE HANDED SEX
......KEYWORD GUYS......WOMEN.....YOU DO REMEMBER THEM
And these guys call DEREK obsessed...listen if i worked hard on a game
, and it's developement was marred by financial woes corporate
schuffling, guy in suits bullshitting, if i was then further caught
behind the techno curve due to funding and had to take more time for
catch up, if i had to essentially write this game with a developement
team of one...me ..and if i loved my future product so much that i
addmittedly became overly zealous in singing its praises...finally if
after suffering from an early buggy release by a back stabbing
publishing house i finally patched the game to perfection ...and if
then i still got smacked by the likes of these professional morons...
i swear by all the mafia that share my very italian Brooklyn
neighborhood ..i would find these guys and pour so much fucking
concrete around them that concrete would be coming outta their ears,
nose, mouth, and ass and it would take a 10 megaton nuke to unwrap
their sorry worthless, do nothing, contribute nothing , are nothing
asses outta the concrete overcoat i made them so snug in
Has any of these 'Professional Morons"played the game With
the latest patches and made a web page with intelligent
criticism...you know guys like the kind you used to offer in these
newsgroups when you still had a gaming life?.I would love to see an
intelligent criticism of the newest patched game that intelligently
reviews the game interface, graphics, flight dynamics, neural net,
strategy, rendering, modeling, AI, etc.....Can we ever expect these
asswipes to do this.....NO ...because they are on a Fucking
crusade....look derek is zealous about his game..and admittedly over
the top on occaision..(hey its HIS fucking game ..wouldn't YOU be
too??)..but these professional moron asswipes have.......am hearing a
loud boomong silence here...they have done NOTHING...Derek dispite the
time he spends rightly or wrongly ...ripping down his critics HAS
FINISHED A FUCKING GAME What the hell have they done...?????

One thing that'd completely change the way we look at dial-up
internet, is the Consumer DSL technology. You can expect download
speeds of upto (and more than) 1 Mega bit/sec and upload of
384 kb/sec (both rates can be adjusted). You 'll be using the same
telephone line, that's already installed at your home. No
installation of any sort required at your end (though, some changes
are required at central telephone office). You'll plug it in the
same wall conection that you have and you can talk at the same time
when you are connected. And the biggest feature is that,
you can expect the price of these modems to be uh.. reasonable.

BTW, this technology isn't just in conceptual phase. I have used
its prototypes and they do work. Pretty cool, IMHO.

Sorry for drifting off topic. (I hope I won't get plonked ;-)

Looks like I'll be waiting for the disk also. I just spent 5 damn hours
downloading it from the Active Worlds server (the only one that would respond)
and not ONE SINGLE FILE MATCHED the size it was supposed to be. Ended up with a
broken ZIP file that ended up 42 megs after trying to pkfix it.
You'd think maybe one or two files would have to be re-downloaded, but every
damn one?!?!?! I guess it's a good thing the game is free, cause if I paid
money for this kind of crap I'd be a little upset.

No, ADSL is different.... DSL technology has been
around for about 10 years.....

Consumer DSL (or CDSL) is a way of using a DSL technology
on the existing telephone setup, without >any< installation
at end user's home. It'll cost you a lot less than ADSL,
but the data rate 'll be lower too. (That is, if you
consider 1 - 1.5 meg bit/sec... a low rate .. heh)
All you'll need is a CDSL modem, that'd go in place
of your regular modem. You can consider, CDSL a
consumer friendly version of DSL..

I'm sorry to hear about your opinion.
Thank goodness it only took me 3.5 minutes to download.
(I'm going to miss this T1 when I graduate)

Does that include PC Gamer? :)

Ok, the game's free now. I spent 25$ on it last december, but ok.. :(

Derek, now the game's free, there's not really a need for the CD-check
anymore, can you (or anyone) make a crack, so I can play at work too?
;-) Or do I have to download the game and throw away the CD?

Is the free version exectly the same as the CD I have (patched to d7)?

I posted something about this in the GNN section of my website. You must either
use the BC3K.BAT file that came in MAKEBC3K.ZIP or use /n /d1 to run the game.

Also, if the 'cdrom=' parameter in BC3000AD.INI is pointing to your cd-rom,
you MUST have a cdrom, any cdrom, in the drive. If you point it to your hard
disk, ie CDROM=C then it will think the hard drive is the cd-rom

Hope this helps
