Does anyone know what tech you need in order to be able to build
arboriums?

Thanks...

You need Microbiology, Pharmaceuticals, Genetics, Genetic Manipulation,
and Advanced Bacteriology

Lets expand this for a discussion though. I have been a little
disappointed in arboritums. The only seem to improve farms by about 15%.
They take a long time to research. Time that could be used for infantry,
or ships.
My question is: How do you use arboritums? Do you "burn thru" as fast
as you can discover the tech and then use them? Or due you take them
later, whenever you can trade for them.
I'm more interested in PBEM or human opponent strategies. The AI
doesn't provide much competition (OK, that should be obvious in any
strategy game.) Also, I imagine that this could be a house specific
strategy choice.

Just wondering.

I agree with you when it comes to areas which are good for producing food,
but when it comes to barren or ice planets (Delphi) it is necessary. Food
production in tundra can be doubled. Likewise with desert or forests. If I
am playing Hawkwood or Li Halan, I try and get ASAP. While if I am anyone
else I usually wait till I have 3+ labs to research it.

I usually research right through until I get them unless I can agree with
another player to trade tech and then I usually let him research the
Microbiology section while I research Physics. I like arboriums because
with some houses, any little improvement in food production may mean the
difference between starvation and being able to build that extra engineer.
I think Hawkwood and Li-Halan benefit the most from arboriums. Decados
can use them because the extremely limited land space on its home planet
makes every producing city important. I think al-Malik and Hazat can
probably do without them and never miss them. I believe their best
utilization is on the planets with very limited land mass, where you can
only build a small number of production cities.
You can trade for other tech- but remember that the Microbiology tech
usually requires 250 research points, while the early Physics tech only
requires 125 points. Make sure your tech trade agreement takes that into
account or you get done in. Your partner trades for one tech on one turn
and then gives you the other tech on the next turn. That's why I take the
Physics route in tech trades, since I am the one who has to give the two
techs,so I don't have to rely on the kindness of strangers( or friends).
Your thoughts?
