What I am wondering is if there are any sure-fire stratigies to use when
encountering enemy ships. I usually just sail around it in circles
(making aiming hard) or I bring down my sail (making me a sitting duck)
and fire away. I have found that using chain shot to take out the sails
and then sitting behind the enemy ship and shooting grape or round shoot
is fairly effective, but I have lost at least a quarter of my crew by
then. Ramming seems kind of crazy unless your out of ammo and your sure
your crew would get wiped out. Boarding the enemy ship is a waste of
resources unless you greatly outnumber the other crew. Does anyone have some
good ways of fighting off the enemy ships?

Why I think this game sucks...
I will be comparing it to Pirates, which it should (after 10 years) be
better than.
Bad things:
o Only have one ship
o No hot keys for save, etc.
o Combat gets old and is unintuitive
o The only thing to do in the game is take people places and
get more money.
o Boring Plot
o Even more Boring ENDING
o Mediocre Music
Pirates had good things like Sword Fighting, and finding lost treasures
and getting ranks from eveyrone (all nationalities) and marrying people,
and finding lost family members, and more realistic trading....
I finished the game, and all I got for my trouble was a crappy picture...
I thought the game sucked....

what is an estate? thanks
I just spotted this game for the first time today. It looks exactly
like an update Pirates. Do any of you have a review of the game yet?
I liked Pirates with the exception of anything to do with battle. Does
High Seas handle it any better? Etc.
Thanks,
Craig

Craig,
I would not get it. You'll play it for about a day and drop it. See my
previous posting. The game is no challenge, and its entertainment qualities
wear out after about two hours flat. I was also looking for a game
about pirates/trade before, but this game falls very short. It is always the same,
trade, fight, trade, fight. The game never gets any more challenging than
when you started it. There is no incentive to grow except to finish the game.
The computer does not increase the level of challenge over time as in traditional
strategic combat games. The graphics of opposing ships are very poor and boxy.
The box attracted me a lot to this game, the content dissapointed me quite a bit.
Finally, to make matters worse, when you board an opposing ship with your sailors
and soldiers you get a static generic picture with two ships with sailors and soldiers
shooting at each other along with a progress bar showing how the fight is progressing
- you don't get to participate, just sit back and watch the action! - talk about
passive entertainment.
The trade mechanism is better than in Pirates, the sailing is easier
to accomplish (albeit less accurate a simulation), and everything else
is worse than Pirates. Buy Pirates at a third of the cost.

I believe that someone posted here before that they were able to buy their first
estate with 300,000 gold pieces. You can only do this in your home port. As
soon as you enter port, if you have enough gold, you'll be offered an
estate. You may need to be at least a Journeyman for this to occur but I am not
sure. I returned the game so I never got to buy an estate myself.
