Well, after numberous misadventures and restarts, the Master of
Magic download page is again on a reliable server. For the FAQS,
patches, editors, etc. try

http://www.proaxis.com/~jarvinen/magic

and find the download link.

If you don't want to hear a rant again Mindspring, you may bail
here.

I used to have Netcom as my provider for my file areas and they
used to be great. But then Mindspring bought them out and I
switched (unwittingly and unwillingly) to Mindspring. And they
had a band width limit. And they had busy signals (with Netcom I
may have had one busy signal a month instead of five a night).
And they managed to screw me out of a month of service. So
goodbye Mindspring and back to my original ISP (www.proaxis.com)
who graciously gave me an additional 5mb of space which allowed
to put back the download page.

So if Mindspring wants to limit their bandwidth and provide
crappy phone service, that is fine. But it seems rather low not
to provide the same level of service and efficiency that I had
with Netcom. I am also of the opinion that Mindspring is
catering to low-end customers and trying to rid themselves of
high-end users (just my opinion, mind you, and the only evidence
I have is of my experience). But their self-promotion really
grates on me and I see them only as another money-grubbing, "the
hell with service", capitalistic, shoddy American company trying
to cash in on the Internet boom. So I voted with my feet. I
walked.

Do you think you could update your page more? Add more
strategies ,wishlist and stuff?

Also the Diary of the Wizard Saxon seems to be incomplete does the
author ever intend to finish it??

Well... I would like to. But time is a big issue. And the
interest isn't as strong as it used to be. To do it 'right' is
a lot of work, so I just occasionally (ok, 'rarely' then) add a
tidbit or two.

You know, the first time I read Chapter 13, I thought there would
be another chapter. Now when I read Chapter 13, it sounds like
it is the end. What does everyone else think? Is Chapter 13 the
last chapter? Do we need more closure? Does anyone else wnat to
finish it (assuming it is unfinished)?

Another point... can anyone think of another (old) game that can
still generate such interest? I think MoM was first published
in 1992, yet we can still get long threads on strategy, tactics,
bugs... Wasteland had a similar following but doesn't seem to
generate the posts that MoM does. The Gold Box (RPG by SSI) as a
group still gets a lot of attention. Eye of the Beholder (I and
II) also get some action.

Any others?

Well, 1994 actually. The final patch came out in early 1995. This is still a
long time ago in "PC years", however. I can think of several reasons for its
longevity, and few other games have this combination.

First is its genre - strategy games naturally age much better than action games
(which are overtaken by technology) and adventure games (which you solve once
and then put away for the next game). MOM's graphics are crude by today's
standards, but graphics are not what the game is about.

Second is its open-ended nature. Most games have one or two best strategies,
and players quickly lose interest after the newness wears off. MOM has many
possible strategies, and many possible variations on each. Gamers who just
want to "beat the game" and move on to the next complained that MOM is too easy
to win. This is not a problem for me - I like the fact that I can experiment
with really dumb strategies and still have a shot at winning! Many people who
like MOM tend to look at it as a sort of "SimConquest" rather than as a
competitive game.

Third is its lack of a sequel. For example, there would probably be many more
posts about Civ I if its many sequels did not exist. The sequel does not
always replace the original in gamers' interest, but at least divides the
audience.

You might consider a collabration with someone else..I would offer to do
it, but I doubt I know enough to help..

Why do you think it's the end? It doesn't seem likely to me for the
story to end by introducing another Wizard-Horus?

I don't think that's possible unless we get the permission of the
author..Anyway the best way to know if it's the end is just to ask the
author by email..

Maybe someone could start another story..The Saxon Wizard currently
doesn't have much character in the sense that he appears to be logical
and reasonable as Wizards go..

It would be interesting to write from the View point of a Power-Hungry
but inept (newbie play strategy) Wizard for example..

Your examples don't really compare because MOM is the only strategy game
in the list..RPGS no matter how good eventually get replayed to
death..I've heard of Old strategy games like Elite, MULE etc..But I was
just getting into computers games around the MOM era , so my knowledge
of them is ZERO..

I think it ended with with a good note, the 'graduation' of the wizard's
apprentice. It would be kind of nice to see what happens to the rest of
the story, since the 'game' wasn't over. I don't think anyone but the
original author should finish it, if it's going to be done. If someone
wanted to do their own story, though, that might be interesting. You could
have MoM fanfic, sort of. I must admit that I started one after reading
the Diary, though I got distracted with other games to play, etc.
