Although I didn't have great difficulty in getting what I assumed was a
"Gold" on this level, the thing won't acknowledge my victory at all, even
doing many more than the 24 cars you are supposed to do.

So what am I missing - I did something like 15 runs with 2 passenger / and
or mail cars well before the gold deadline, and some all the way back home
before the final bronze deadline was up. They were direct links, but there
were also some food cars which came first from further west before linking
to Constantinople. Could it be it only wants proper cargo, ie non
passengers? This place shows up as Constan on the map - is this an
abbreviation, or is there another Constantinople hidden away!?

It has to be a non stop run from Paris to Constantinople. If you stopped at
any place on the way, it doesn't count.

Passengers are fine; in fact I would rarely bother with anything except
passengers and mail in this scenario. It sounds like you might have
connected to Constanta in Rumania instead of to Constantinople.
Constantinople is about one screen due south of Constanta; along the
coast there's just Varna and Burgas in between.

Best wishes,

I thought it was Istanbul not Constantinople. Been a long time gone since
Constantinople. But then again I guess that's nobody's business but the Turks.
