Well, I must admit that I like this game too, I am currently enjoying
some mission which involves looting a green-skin camp, but I have to
agree, the lack of the ability to pause AND give orders annoys the heck
out of me. The commander doesn't to jot, he is just another cavarly dude
with more HP's. The incredibly stupid way of having to minimize losses
totally annoys me too, if the game could be setup in army vs army mode
rather than 2 units charges you and you kill them, move a bit more, 2
more units appear etc etc, and if you were given more loot, it would be
more furious wargaming than what it currently is.
As I have played the board-game I must say they don't really convert the
rules all that well. The magic users are a hassle to use, but after alot
of trial and error I think I can say I have use for that lousy fire-mage
after all, but the game shouldn't have to be about fast reaction times,
the board game is totally turnbased and involves some deep thinking
before moving. Some might say that there IS chaos in real-life battles,
well, naturarly, but this isn't supposed to be real, it claims to be a
conversion from a rather popular board-game as far as I know..
Great sound, good graphics (why no 3d units??), decent plot line, and
some nice suprises makes it alot of fun, but its annoying have to rely
on the ol' 'give the cavarly the shield of ptolos and CHAAARGE'. I am
also at a loss why you can't customize your army at all, why can't you
as a commander hire new troops?!
Well, I guess I am ranting a bit here, its sorta the game that you
enjoy, but it still annoys you...

I totally agree... The mages would be of so much more use if you could
always pick your spells... having the teleport/blast combo is the best
way to go with theese guys, but ya can't always do it.. in the mission I
am on now, it would be a great help....
*SPOILER WARNING* Well, mebbe.. dunno.. warning ya just in case.. =P
I am on the mission with the hand of Nagash, who happens to be the
necromancer trapped in the northern glaciers by the elfs a few turns
ago, very powerfull character on a war-chariot. This mission is hard, I
can get past it, but I always loose a troop or two, something that I
know will make the game even harder later, and since you cannot *hire*
new troops, it becomes lethal after awhile.
Now, the enemy comes down on you around this hill, one side is easy to
protect with the fire-mage casting blast all the time, but the other
side gets chewed up, and the problem is that the amount of troops are
equal on both sides too. If you had teleport, you could port up and nuke
a few troops whilst they march down on you. If thats not enough, after
you deal with this first wave, and try to get the hand of Nagash,
another wave of undead hits you from all sides. Last time I played it,
my poor grudgebringer cavalry ended up surviving all the wave through,
only to die at the hand of Nagash.
Now, mind you, the missions before this one were equally unbalanced, and
imho, it doesn't do much for the fun factor. I mean, the only way to win
theese fights is to move troops to the correct area, move the right type
of troop to take out another enemy troop, or, lead a enemy troop into
your waiting cannon/crossbow fire. If its not exactly done right, you
will loose, or loose troops. Its almost like we are playing according to
the programmers script, you cannot really make any use of the terrain on
larger maps because of this.
Well, I have a question, anyone around here finished off nagash? If so,
would you mind telling me your strategy, its just getting boring playing
the mission over and over and over and over....
IF they would only allow us to hire troops....

My personal favorite is the "burning head"/"teleport" combo, although a
blast from the flank can be devastating.
> *SPOILER WARNING* Well, mebbe.. dunno.. warning ya just in case.. =P
-snip-
Hand of nagash is probally the hardest battle overall. In addition to
using blast spells, use the "crimson bands". When nagash comes down, he
usually dosen't have a dispel on him, so just crimson band him and
target with archers/cannon. Same goes for the undead chariots (which are
the real problem in this level). Make sure you have some magic swords
passed around since there are enemies that can only be killed by them.
Hope this helps.
Got stuck there too. This is were my frustration with the mages
really increased. Why couldn't the dumbass Bright Mage put that
stupid teleport spell in his stupid book? While my cannons are
pumping, Bright mage could teleport behind some troops and fireball
them. Isn't this a strategy game? The more and more time I spend
with this game, the more I hate it.
It's like: Here's your troops, Here's where you could put it. Here's
what your mage could only cast. Here's your enemy (standing on better
defensive terrain by the way), and lets see if you could "guess" the
right move to win. Oh by the way, the enemies outnumber you on every
mission.
That's a good combo, especially in the hand of nagash secnario if you
have the magic to spare. The flamestorm spell is of course extra
devastating againt artillery since they cannot move. I like the burning
head mostly for the laugh and the fear effect. Nothing like teleporting
in behind an enemy in a multiplayer game, launching a head or two, and
'porting out again before they can turn around. The only thing the enemy
hears is "whup whup whup (the teleport), woosh(the spell being cast),
hahahaha (the manical laugh of the burning head), and AAAHHHhhhhh! (the
scream of his troops fleeing the buring head in fear), whup whup whup
(teleporting out again) ;)
Thanks! I actually managed last night to win it with very few
casualties, guess I discovered the setup the programmer wanted ya to
use.. but, suprisingly, after the first wave of attackers, I were sorta
grumpy, I just launched a full out attack on the last chariots, skeleton
archers (whoever has the shield of ptolos goes for them), and I actually
got all the last troops without loosing a single trooper myself.. =P
Hand of Nagash bit the dust after he got slammed in the chest by a
cannonball, he charged em.. hehe..
Friggin' lossa clicking going on when you do this tho.. =}

Well, I kinda like this approach in a way. It's kinda like a card
game and you're "dealt a hand" (of course, you *do* have some
modification of this allowed in this game). Now it's up to your wits
to keep you alive.
