(Good stuff munched)
Thanks for posting this!
I have a few questions, though...
I'm not sure how training effects different skills. Could you (or someone
else) give me a run-down?
Also, you didn't mention exporting rare animals. Is it worth it to hire
some wardens?

The following tips should help those of you who are struggling to get
your forest economies off the ground.
Tourism pays and its green - It wont support a city though.
A hotel with a capacity of 80 rooms with an attraction with 30 spots
(both at quality 10) fed by a ferry port and a large airport will
profitably support an island with no city without much pollution. Your
initial funds will support setting this up. When you get running local
happyness and world opinion tend to run at around 99% as does your
ecology rating (Note you will need to train your construction agent
before they are capable of building a large airport).
Mining pays
SimIslands never run out of coal and iron ore. When you export these you
earn 150 per 5 workers. This can be doubled by converting iron ore into
steel..
Industry & cities pollute
When you decide to westernise your island paradise you had better be
ready for pollution levels to go through the roof. If you place your
industrial/city sites too close together the problem gets worse.
Oil is a good export and doesnt require too much of a workforce. Your oil
reserves are pretty easy to deplete though so dont make this a long term
strategy.
Drugs Pay
If you make your citizens miserable enough quickly enough you will notice
that your villages get surrounded by poppy fields. You can set up your
own carly(sp) drugs cartel. As you can imagine this is not good for your
world opinion rating but it can be very lucrative (and its good for the
ecology score (no pollution, no deforestation)).
Cars are it.
Once you have decided to westernise your economy you are going to have to
rapidly get to the point where you can export quality cars to the world.
This is one of the few areas you can expect to make a good profit - high
tech is also a good earner.
Import dues
If you want to import resources to your island you will need to construct
a facility of the type required to produce the resource locally. When its
built set the workforce down to 1, set the production to whatever you
want and click the import button. You will need an agent with negotiation
skills on hand in order to do this.
Workers Paradise
Although you can keep your cities denizens happy with cars and consumer
goods this can also be achived by keeping healthcare, education, leisure
and spirituality at good levels in your cities. This is a better option
when you need to gear your own production facilities to produce export
revenues.
Exploration Pays
If you train your agent with exploration skills before sending them out
into the jungle you will find that they find more. So far mine has turned
up an ancient fortress, an ancient golf course, A ruined city (with ufo),
a working ufo and several endangered species & pots of cash. You should
leave your exploration until you have got the economy sorted out though.
Hope this is useful to some of you

A handy tip to build in the jungle, with explorer is to move him deep in the jungle. Right
click on the Construction person, and then left click on the face of the explorer agent. Hey
presto, you can now build logging camps (and any small object) in the jungle.

Exporting animals earns loads of cash.
