The Sports Interactive team are delighted to support this long-awaited
fan
club which has been set up by lifelong Championship Manager fans -
Marc
Duffy (Doubli) and J.S Foo (Plastiqe), who have both been fans of the
game
since its very first release back in 1992.
The CM 97/98 Patch is also available from this site.
Work on Championship Manager 3 is continuing at a pace:
- Most competitions from the represented countries have been
implemented.
- The match engine is now in the final tuning stage.
- Stats and records for all competitions are completed.
- Work is soon to begin on the transfer market system.
We have now decided to include the Brazilian, Argentinean
Championships and
the J-League. Due to the extent of the project, release has now been
put
back till towards the end of this year.
We have some screen shots for CM3 available at our website to give you
a
taster of what you can expect. These screen shots can also be
downloaded
for you to view in their full 16 bit glory.

The Championship Manager 97/98 Patch
=============================
For the last 4 months we have been working solidly on the foreign language
versions of CM 97/98 (French, Dutch, Italian and Portuguese). These are now
all finished and if not already in the shops will be very soon. At the same
time we have been working on the improving the original CM 97/98 and fixing
the minor bugs that have come to light and been reported to us. The
following lists what has been fixed. We have also mentioned what we have
been unable to fix and what we feel does not need fixing.
We would like to thanks all of this who set comments and suggested
improvements for CM 97/98.
Improvements and Bugs Fixed
=====================
Wages
The limit of Ł50000 has been removed. However, this does not mean you can
offer what you like. The board will limit it depending on the state of your
finances. Basically if you have over Ł20 Million in the bank you will be
able to offer what you like - any less than this then the board will step in
with a limit.
International Duty
If a player is playing in an international friendly (or U21 match) his club
match will take precedence.
So a player in your squad can be picked for the international squad but will
not be able to play if you have a match.
The national teams now have 25 players to make up for this and to reflect
the usual national squad sizes seen today.
Player's Value
The value of a player now remains more stable and will no longer increase
and decrease dramatically.
B-Teams
B-Teams will no longer sell off their players without your approval.
Loan
We have now allowed players to be re-called from loan after the transfer
deadline.
Attendances
The attendance figures for matches has been made more realistic. So for
minor competitions such as the "Auto Windscreen Shield" the attendance
figures will reflect real life.
Databases
The databases have been updated as much as possible since the release of
CM97/98 - thanks to all of you who sent us updated player, team and manager
data. If you have made your own database updates and want to keep using them
then please make back-ups of them in a separate directory before installing
the patch. The team database (TMDATA.DB1) is no longer compatible with the
original CM 97/98 and the one we supply must be used.
Fixture Clashes
We have removed where ever possible top division fixture clashes with
international matches
Too many friendlies (the "Addfix 1" bug)
The fixture scheduler has been improved and now will not crash if you
arrange loads of friendly matches.
Work Permits
Computer teams will also suffer from work permits not being renewed.
Computer teams will be willing to sell players without a work permit.
Free transferring players without work permits will not affect board
confidence.
Dutch Player Histories
Many player histories for Dutch players have been added. We would like to
thank Sander Coolen for supplying us with this information.
Minor Fixes
During the making of the foreign language versions of CM97/98 many minor
improvements have been made to many areas of the game.
Bugs Not Fixed
===========
Sub bug - 12 players on pitch
The major bug we have not been able to fix is the substitute bug where a
player who is substituted does not come off and a team can have 12 players
on the pitch. We have not been able to find the cause if this bug and so not
been able to fix it. This is a very rare bug and we have never seen it
happen ourselves. It is a screen text bug as oppose to a match engine bug
and does not mean the opposition team actually has 12 players on the pitch
(as this is not possible with the CM2 match engine).
7 Subs in European Games
Due to current screen designs, it would have proved too difficult to
implement the 7 subs in Champions league ruling, however this will be
featured in CM3.
Not Bugs
=======
Make Player Unavailable
We removed the "Make Player Unavailable" option as we felt this was
unrealistic. The manual is incorrect as far as this is concerned.
Contract
The "Ctr" sign by a player shows up 3 months before the end of a player's
contract expires as a warning.
Big Club Release Clause
This can come into effect at any time even a week after signing a player -
so be warned and check a player's clauses.

This new fix has resulted in some funny occurences. For example, a
friendly of Australia vs Wales resulted in only 10 Australian players
available on match day (but still beat Wales by 3-1). In another
friendly Wales have only 12 players available (11 + 1 sub only).

I just found out that I am unable to recall players from loan after
the transfer deadline even I have applied the patch and restarted a
new game. The option is simply not available.
Ian
I played almost two seasons during the weekend (using ADO Den Haag,
a Dutch 2nd-division team), so I can't say whether the 50000/week
limit is gone, but one thing is fixed: the amount the board lets
you offer as wages doesn't fluctuate wildly like it did in the
unpatched version. Great stuff.

This is a great idea, but it is rather poorly implemented. First of
all, your player will only turn down a friendly/U21 game if it is
*on the same day* as the club match -- if it is e.g. one day
earlier, your player will play, and will be exhausted for the club
game.
I've also seen one of my players first play 90 minutes for the club
team and then be named on the subs bench for his international team
and come on to play for the 2nd half -- all in one day.

The values still peak at around the trading deadline, and can be
halved before summer, for no apparent reason.

Seems to be true, and now you can't fool the fans into the stands
by bringing in a top-class European team for a friendly. This
makes life a little harder for the small teams, which I suppose is
good.

This is good, but I noticed that Ajax, who made their way to the
UEFA cup title, still had to play 2 league games in 4 days just
before the final (Sat--game, Sun--off, Mon--game, Tue-off, Wed--
UEFA Cup final). You'd think the league would agree to postpone the
Monday game -- which happened to be the last league game of the
season -- to the following weekend.

Doesn't seem to be true. At least in my game, Feyenoord still has
an Argentinian and a Czech player on the roster, and they haven't
played a single game in the two seasons I've played. Both of these
guys are on the trading list though.

Well, it does state "international matches". And in r/l, what you
describe seems to be the norm - the English FA turned down Man Utd's
request for a season extension, so they ended up having fixtures about
as tight as you describe. Looks like Arsenal might have a similar
problem this season, too.

Yeah, I know. My point really is that in CM9798, a "fixture clash"
seems to be defined as "two games on the same day or on
consecutive days" . Having only one rest day between matches
is bad enough (although you'll see this a lot if you qualify
for the Cup Winners' Cup), and having 3 games
in 5 days is about as bad as playing two in consecutive days.
Of course, this is a minor gripe and it only comes to play if
the final 2 games of the season are really important to your team
(you're fighting for championship or a place in the European cups)
AND you've made it to the UEFA Cup final.
And in r/l, what you

Ah... that I didn't know. It's easier to accept poor scheduling now
that I know it's modeled after real-life hardships. 8-) Seriously
though, I'd like to have an option 'Ask to reschedule' which
would work much the same way as cancelling a friendly.

Ian
I'm gutted that they didn't fix the "recall from loan" after the
transfer deadline bug either... I have a few injuries and would like
to recall a couple of the kids out on loan but can't do it now.
Come on guys, this *has* to be fixed.
