Tiger 99 Patch Hell

I've just gone out and bought Tiger Woods 99 for my brother who's a golf fan
but not much of a computer game player.

It installs and runs OK but I'm having trouble with the patch.
When I install the patch it turns off the hardware 3D which I've been
playing with using my Voodoo. If I go to turn it back on the game says it
needs to restart which is normal. The trouble is the restart never works.
The game shuts down but crashes when reloading. When I try to start again we
are back in software.
Has anyone got any ideas? I know it's an old game now but it played well in
the demo and was ultra cheap. I really want to install the demo as it has
some nice fixes.

I couldn't get it to work on my system after I installed DirectX 7. I gave
up after a while... it was fine under DirectX 6, however. I'm using a
Voodoo 3 2000. You might want to try EA Sports forum at their website on
Tiger Woods golf games; it's a fairly active board.
