Apparently Derek thought that Starforce and online activation were
necessary to protect his latest revision of his game...you know the same
game he's repackaged four times.
I said on his 'state-controlled' forum that I thought that was a
bone-headed decision, and that I would keep my money. That was too much
honesty for Derek and away I went. Which was fine, he has waaay too much
control over every aspect thata his product is enjoyed. He claims ownership
of any fan-fiction written, he's the absolute head of the multiplayer
community, where players have to join 'fleets' in order to have access to
multiplayer servers. If he doesnt like something a player does on one of
'his' servers he orders the 'fleet commander' to boot him.
Ive always seen these overly-controlling, pschyo tendencies that Ive
always read about him, but tried to overlook for whatever reason, I just
cant anymore. Ive seen him break promise after promise, claim bugs were
fixed when they werent, move features into the next version saying they were
never planned even though they were shown on the game box.
I totally see why his forum underlings are labeled Toadies, they call
him Boss, Jesus what happened to these guys spine?
I had an idea back when Derek claimed BCM would still have
multiplayer, that I would setup my own web page and game server. Call it
something like "Free-cruiser: Because space is too big for bullshit".

Poor Mister Fraud Smart suffers from a very severe case of a personality
disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder. This is a personality disorder
that I like to refer to as the asshole personality disorder. Most any NPD
individual is probably an asshole. Someone that used to work with me, I
believe, has the same disorder. The sad part of that story is that she is
turning her two little boys into future NPD's. For example, she told me that
she had beaten her sixth grader because he had the audacity to request
permission to pick out his own clothes to wear each morning before school.
When I told her that I thought that he just wanted to grow up and that part
of growing up was deciding what to wear every day, she acted totally stunned
because she had apparently assumed that he had made his request just to
hassle her. She's told me similar stories like her kids asking to pick out
their own food at a fast food restaurant and them having to be beaten for
their audacity. Mr. Fraudman is probably turning his own kid into a future
pathetic human being, another little asshole in his own image.

Isn't that right Derek Smart? You were beaten as a kid, beaten into being a
pathetic individual with NPD? You now are probably busy passing on your
disorder to your own defenseless little kid?

Real Men of the Right Stuff huh??

Ok keep telling yourself that.

Now quickly run back to the 3000ad board and post to derek, because PM'ing
him without his permission will anger him, and tell all you see that you
defended derek's honor and the whole site. Tell them that Im one of the
dim-witted masses who live in ignorance of derek's glory, that I certainly
wasn't bright enough to understand such a complex game(s) as what derek
makes, nevermind that Ive run BCMG and UC servers in the past that anyone
could join.

I know I know, how dare me directly tell derek he was wrong.

Do you have ANY idea who you are talking to? I thought not.

It's people like you who give real developers like Derek Smart a bad
name. All he's trying to do is create genuine simulation - not some
namby-pamby game people like you are so used to - but a GENUINE
simulation of a highly complex, no-holds-barred war in space.

Of course you have to follow orders. Of course you have to accede to
authority. When you enter the game, you are a mere crewman; if you
work hard, you will find yourself rising through the ranks - as those
of us who have done the time and followed orders have done.

But people like you just don't "get it". You are too wrapped up in
your own little real-life world to understand that there is more to
life than paying the mortgage and feeding the kids. There is a war to
be fought, and every moment you spend on those petty real-world
affairs takes you away from the action; deprives OUR space navy of a
fighter. But don't you worry your icke head about that; after all,
you are only an ensign, and not a good one at that.

But if you think that it's OK to criticise someone who might just be
the world's premier black games developer, just because you aren't up
to scratch in the virtual universe that is GALCOM, then I can only
say: I pity you.

What flavor KoolAide does Mr. Smart make you drink?

good God man. I've not seen someone so brainwashed and wrapped
up in the fanboy blanket in a long, long time. The original poster,
and Bill, made excellent and accurate posts about Mr. Smart's rude,
childish and narcissistic behavior. You have to be blind not to see
it for yourself.

The game may be improving, but Mr. Smart is a horses ass, and
anyone with half a brain can see that. So my question to you is,
what happened to the other half of your brain?

Are you listening to yourself?
Please understand that I dont give a damn who you are, or claim to be.
But life is too short for bullshit and Ive had my fill of it from derek's
antics. And if you think its not OK to criticise a game developer then it is
you who should be pitied.
He's not Jesus, he's a programmer who keeps releasing the same game over and
over with an occasional face lift. But people have caught on and each title
receives less press and notice than the one before it. The game, and he are
a non-issue.

Sometimes I despair of what people have become. If you can't see the
GOOD that Derek Smart is doing, then you need the other half of your
brain removed, and flushed down the toilet like the first half.

Why can't you people see what is occurring? There is a WAR going on,
and all you can do is whinge about whether asteroids are intelligent,
or the stars are octagonal or dodecahedral; don't be such fools - what
is important is that the enemy are encroaching on our systems; the
threat is not just a fantasy - it's immediate; it's here, and it's
here now.

BUt that's OK. Sit on your backside. Let the Real Men do the job;
you probably aren't up to it anyway. We'll win the war without you.
I'll post you a white feather when I get home.

I claim to be nothing, I *am* nothing, compared to Derek Smart. It is
in His Universe that mortals like me fight, and die, to keep people
like you safe. Think about that for a moment - you sit by the
fireside, warm and comfortable, while others do the fighting for you.
Doesn't that make you feel ashamed?

Ensign, it is not too late - the Supreme Commander is all-forgiving;
he knows that sometimes egos - even small egos like yours - sometimes
get in the way of reason. Go back to Him, explain that you
momentarily lost your way, but that you are now more humble, and ready
to take on The Enemy with as much spunk and gusto as any other
crewman. I am sure that in His magnificence He will permit you to
crew a fighter on one of the capital ships around Sol.

Back in the old days (BC3000) the SC was inundated with so much fan
mail and forum posts that it became very tedious for him to wade
through a thread when everyone was top posting. He soon declared that
top posters would be banned. We do not top post here as a courtesy to
him.

Yes you should know they're all dickheads. And also you should know that
this newsgroup has no space sim topics on it ... ever (unless you count
BC3000 flame posts). I wonder if it would be possible to apply to get this
newsgroup withdrawn - its such a waste of 'space'? Ha that was almost a
joke.

Which coincidentally is also the funniest thing that's been said on this
newsgroup for ages as well.

Oh do, fuck off stan, and go back to your ridiculous little

That's not quite true. I seem to recall this one thread back in '98 . . .
or was it '99? Anyway, I'm almost certain it had something to do with
space-sims.

Yeah, there is some of that, but not as much as you may think (at least,
not about his games, per se). I think you'll find that most of the
criticism has concerned academic fraud, promised game features that were
not delivered, and a history of making hollow legal threats. I'm pretty
sure there may have been something about a freight train, but the details
elude me.

> but for fans of space
> simulations it really is worth checking out.

The concept is intriguing, but from what I've read (both and good and bad)
about the implementation I don't think it's quite my cup of tea. For
example, even fans of the game describe an unintuitive interface resulting
in an unneccesarily large time investment just to learn the controls. I
simply don't have much time to devote to gaming, let alone just learning an
interface. Still, if you enjoy it I think that's just great.

explicitly unwelcome at 3000ad.

Thank you Bret. I do sympathise with those people who have trouble
coming to terms with the interface, a little more effort is all that's
really needed though. I think many gamers in these days of consols are
just too lazy to put in the time.

Oh yes, I've seen Shingen around, I believe he's also one of the "not
welcomes" at the moment. Currently you can't save over from one game
to another, but this is a promised feature, and yes, NPC ships are
present. It's highly configurable to suit most scenarios anyway.

I think the problem may be that in Dereks forum you have been shielded from
the realities of online life where people other than Derek can be rude to you
and get away with it and you are actually allowed to have your own thoughts
and opinions, and of course, most shockingly of all, are allowed to voice them
without getting banned if Derek doesn't agree. Or perhaps that is a side of
him you have never seen, although I doubt it, but you just decide to turn a
blind eye to it, tug your forelock, and carry on. You can admire the game he
created all you like but you can hardly admire the man.

I don't have a problem with Derek running a tight ship. If you want to
take part on his forums you have to follow his rules. I suppose you're
a "rebel" Memnoch, and that you "plough your own furrow", all fine and
good if you don't mind disorder and chaos. Or perhaps you just like to
act independent on the internet and do your own "forelock tugging" to
your boss in RL.

I think there is a fairly large difference between running a tight ship and
what Derek does on his forum. For example, would you suggest that Hitler and
Stalin ran a tight ship? I'm not comparing what those two did in any way per
se to what Derek does but as far as megalomaniac control freak paranoics
perhaps he comes a close third? ;-)

Well, I'm not a console gamer and I don't think I'm lazy. In my judgement,
I don't think it would be worthwhile to spend what little gaming time I
have learning an interface for a sim that I won't have much time to play
around with anyway. Moreover, based on player reviews I'm not at all
certain I would enjoy the game very much even if I did have the time.

The benefit of bottom posting only would apply if you ever had the entire
history of replies to a certain topic in each message and someone new wants
to read through all of them in succession. But I think you will find that
most people dont quote more than the last one or two replies anyway on
newsgroups so it doesnt make sense to want to read a newsgroup like you
would a book. Also the fact that you are quoting an article makes it
prefectly reasonable to post your reply above - you would do the same in a
magazine written reply or a footnote in a book etc. I personally dont think
it is wrong at all to top post - in fact I think it actually makes it much
easier to read through several messages quickly than bottom posting does. I
also find that I do not want to read through loads of history - but if I do
I will cycle through the individual postings rather than relying on the last
post to have kept me up to date with the entire history of the thread (which
is obviously extremely unlikely to happen).

So I rest my case. Top posting make more sense in a newsgroup and I
personally prefer both doing it and reading it that way.

Thanks for listening.

These "hang ups" which you so proudly lack are sometimes referred to as
"courtesy" and "good netiquette." It has been pointed out to
you(repeatedly) that there are generally accepted rules concerning when
and when not to top post. Ignoring these standards is generally
considered to be a sign of either rudeness, ignorance, or both.

Even if, as you say, it is easier for *you* to read top-posted
messages, most Usenst participants (putatively, your "audience") do not
agree.

So it's up to you: continue to top-post and be considered an offensive
git, or show some courtesy towards your readers and attempt to cast a
little doubt on the matter.

You are a newbie to space-sim aren't you?

I wish I had the time to read the entire thread, Lemming had me
ROFLin' for AT LEAST several minutes!

This new UC AWA game is just more of the same. Hell, it's getting
worse off now, as he's admittingly reusing the same code base from
BC3K, but NONE of it seems to be working right in an NT/win32
environment.

The NPCs are even MORE screwy then they were in BC3K, the pilots don't
"train" anymore, marines are lobotomized, the graphics are horrid,
blurred and clipped, ect..ect..ect...

At least he's gotten UC 2.00.30 working pretty good. Supposedly the
last patch for UC, and it seems as playable as any other "final"
release 3000AD product.

I'd say, give UC AWA it's prerequisite 50+ patches, and it should be
as good as BCM 1.09.01. =P

Another fly in the ol' BC soup.

See, Derek CREATED indies to exist in the BC universe, encouraged
indies to group together so that Galcommies like yourself, would have
something to shoot at, then expected us indies to be toe-sucking
neophyte ass-kissers (which is completely abhorrent to any
death-dealing, blood-lusting scourge of the spacelanes).

The saddest thing that ever happened to UC MP was the tyranny of the
Fleets, headed up by Derek's little buddy Remo. That and the fact that
it's impossible to SAVE anything online, forcing players to start from
scratch everytime they logged in ( or were booted off by the servers).

It's hard to have a "dynamic" universe when everyone is a toe-sucking
ass-kissing "toady"...but you'll learn that soon enough.

What a crock of crap. As I said, Top Posting is easier to read. What is rude
is someone who insists on bottom posting after quoting several pages of
unrelated post. You have to scroll down every post to read some drivel. As
for upsetting the natural flow, bullshit. In any decent newsreader, the
order of posts is preserved and indented. You don't need to quote the
previous post most of the time anyway.

Now stop quoting somebody elses view of how we all should post.

You don't do what you just did and quote his entire post. You can quote the
sentence you are referring to, then your reply, then quote the next sentence
and your reply etc.
If you just want to add a general comment, or some smartass rubbish, either
top post, or don't quote the entire post at all. We can all follow the

These are not "generally accepted rules" and it has nothing to do with good
netiquette, It's an anoying and flawed attempt at mind control and forcing
people to do as you want them to. It makes it much more difficult to read a
conversation. For crying out loud, most of the time people just quote pages
of rubbish and waste our time making us scroll down to the bottom to
determine that the post is just that, rubbish. Kind of like yours just was.
