I broke my vow of not buying pre-order titles for this but then this is
Egosoft we are talking about. They may release buggy games but they do fix the
bugs, eventually! :-)

That said I am really looking forward to Friday. I have some time off and
can't wait to immerse myself in the X Universe again. But it seems a very
different affair this time around: only a single, upgradeable ship to fly a la
X: Beyond the Future, but you can own multiple ships but you can only give
them orders and not fly them yourself.

However they have given us the ability to roam around these ships, and
stations, on foot so you can poke around and find stuff. I can't wait to see
what the modding community makes of this and I hope that the new mission
director replacement allows for the creation of missions that are non-ship
based. I also read that when on one of these stations, when you look out of a
window into space, the things you see are actually out there and not just
window dressing. So you could order one of your larger ships to follow a path
that would pass you location and you would see it power by!

One thing that concerns me though is the size of the game world and the
location. The original X games had that, to me at least, horrid checkerboard
layout with this arbitrary NSEW gate system. In the new one this has been
replaced with a series of highways since the collapse of the gate system. I
have seen some videos that show a portion of a map and it looks very different
to what we are used to. I have some doubts though that this may just be
attempt at smoke and mirrors to shield things from the player.

So as I say, this is going to be a slow week on the run-up to Friday but I
hope the wait will be worth it!

Yah, I don't understand this at all. It's not like they're going to run
out of downloadable copies of this game.

I got X2 a while ago, and then all X series of games in a recent Humble
Bundle weekly sale, but I've only given X2 a brief try. I'll have to
get around to seriously trying them some time, but right now EVE Online
is filling my space "sim" needs.
