Anyone still play it?

I've reinstalled it last week, but haven't got round to having another look
at it just yet. I'll probably go looking to see if there's any mods for it.
The problem I have with most of these games is that they aren't Elite!

I have it loaded on my machine as well. I have a website with some
patches and mods for Freelancer and you can also try MODDB they have
FL mods as well. My website tries to cover all space sims in general.
Check it out http://www.spacesimcentral.com

Stop spamming your site. Just kidding. I've been to the site many times
before. It's sort of sad that the space sim is a dead genre because...

...

... actually, I have no fucking idea why it's a dead genre. I mean, with PC
processing power today, how come there's no FPS space shooters, let alone
space flight sims?

Seems like there should be a Battlestar Galactica game, given the name
recognition of the franchise and the fact that the modern version of
the TV show is still on.

There's a FS2 mod out there called Beyond the Red Line that is
Battlestar based. Just google 'Battlestar flight sim' and there's
quite a few fan made things floating around. But no stand alone
products aside from the arcade game released on Xbox.

I think the genre died because there was a wide split between the avid
experienced fans and fans new to the genre. The die hards that have
been playing space sims for a while want newtonian physics, complex
mission structures with branches, and a wide variety of ships. These
are things that players new to a genre won't pick up easily. The fans
of the genre have most likely "grown up" with them. So with no new
fans going back and playing the Elites, Wing Commanders, Privateers, I-
Wars, FS and getting up to speed, and the aging avid space sim fan
base getting older and most likely finding other ways to spend their
time and money, who do developers design games for? Trying to appeal
to both end up with games with extremely steep learning curves like
the X-series. Or games like Freelancer, which was fun, but was like
the Diablo of space sims. With the mechanics of these games there's
no way to have an easy mode. I think that is why FPS and RTS games
have continued to be pretty popular, because with the easy mode, a
child can beat them. You think a child could beat I-War 2 or FS2?
Maybe one with the patience. But how rare is that?
