Hi,

I only got a pc for home about a year ago, and I was looking for some
wise words about the best space sims/games.

I've played both the IWar games, and Freespace all of which I enjoyed.

I gather the Freespace games are highly regarded, so I've acquired those
too and I also just picked up Starlancer on ebay.

I'm a but unsure if the X games would suit me, but I have a copy of X2.

Could I ask you for some further recommendations?

Right on, Commanders.

Cheers.

P.S.
And is there a good space station game?

There is an online game called EVE see :
http://www.eve-online.com/ for more info.

In terms of mechanics, EVE is pretty much just a standard MMORPG set
in space. If you want dogfighting with a joystick sort of games, like
those he mentioned, then Jumpgate would be your only MMO option. As for
single player games, I think X 3 might be about it for recent releases.

Thanks guys, I'm not really into online stuff, but let me make this
abundantly clear, older games are fine if I can get them to run on this
here XP machine. I'm an Amiga guy, so games that are around 20 years
old, Warhead, Space Rogue, Star Crusader etc are still great games in my
book. "Recent" is not an issue. :)

So to recap and in no particular order, and sticking with single player
games:

Freelancer
IWar 1 and 2
Freespace 1 and 2
Starlancer
Hardwar

Tell me there's some gems I don't know about. :)

X-Wing Alliamce?

Don't know if it's a gem, but take a look at:

'Tarr Chronicles' (2007)

There is one which is old but don't remember the name, it was
a joystick type of space game where the enemy was cat like people.

Evochron Mercenary, supposed to be out beginning tomorrow (or
thereabouts).

http://www.starwraith.com/evochronmercenary/index.htm

They have other older games along the same vein as well.

But I would highly recommend the X games (the most recent one is the best
IMO), but you're right they're not everyone's cup of tea.

There's also the Privateer remake: http://privateer.sourceforge.net/

Freelancer was great for what it was, but good luck finding it somewhere.

A couple more:

There is a fan-made remake of Privateer. It's freeware and is quite faithful
to the original game. It runs on Vegastrike engine in Windows and Linux.

I highly recommend the five Wing Commander games. They all work fine with
DosBox on a Windows PC. Used copies are still available and have decent
prices.

If you're going to play the original X-Wing and TIE-Fighter games, troll
for the DOS CD-ROM versions; the graphics aren't as good, but the
Windows versions were rather hackish ports bolted onto the X-Wing vs TIE
Fighter engine. These days even a netbook ought to be able to run them
in DOSBox just fine. Of course you'll need a real joystick. And the
games are *tough*.

(XWA was a pretty solid game too. As was XvT's campaign. Boo to
LucasArts for subsequently taking all Star Wars development in-house
and butchering everything that followed..)

Privateer is The Greatest Game Evar(tm). Not that I feel strongly about
it or anything. But the older Wing Commander games all got ported to
Windows as part of the so-called 'Kilrathi Saga' release. Privateer 2
suffered from not quite being balanced right, but was fun.

(The Privateer Gemini Gold remake is decent enough, but doesn't "feel"
the same as the original. It keeps getting clsoer though)

Tachyon was quite good (albeit with a couple of odd design choices) but
DarkStar One... too arcade-y for my tastes, with the magical
powerup/upgrade crystals thing.

The X-series of games are supposedly pretty good (never actually played
'em myself; I'm told they have a bit of a learning curve). The
Freespace games are *very* good, especially the second.

Wing Commander? I played the CD32 version (which was more colourful) on
my souped up Amiga using a patch that increased the framerate, making
the game really playable. I think it was scaled sprites rather than
polygons, but I had a lot of fun with it, but ultimately I preferred
Star Crusader.

Are these official re-releases or do you mean reverse engineered stuff

Yes, both X-Wing and Tie Figter were remade on XvT engine.

What do you know about "Star Ruler" by Blind Mind Studios?
Just got an e-mail for it marked down from $24.99 to $19.99.

Star Ruler is a 4X strategy game. You might want to check out
Shatterstar, if you can find a copy of it.

Didn't see anything about it, just some X-Men stuff. But am
looking at Amanda 2523 or something called that. It looks not bad.
Did get Star Rule, while I knew it was not finished, it does have
potential. Just that only using OpenGL instead of Direct-X, it runs
really slow on my system.

In my opinion X-3 is hard to beat for an elite-clone with pretty much better Everything.
Getting started cold (like I did) requires a little steep learning curve time, but there's a
great resource out on the web, somebody's collected all the faq and walkthroughs and strategy
guides published for it and put them in a (pdf?) book that's free to download.

As far as I'm concerned, this game is better'n anything I tried so far, and I just wish I had
more time to play it.

Thanks for the info. I've not bought a copy of the game. I'm just trying
to decide when I get round to playing it if I should start with X2 which
I picked up cheap a while back.

I think the next game I will try is Freespace.

Don't know if you subscribe to comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action?
But 'Spalls Hurgenson' just recommended the following in that group.

<quote>

* Star Wars - Battle for Endor (replay)
It's not quite the next X-Wing game, but for a quick shot of
space-combat action, Battle For Endor can't be beat. Available
for free from http://www.bruneras.com/ it features that epic
space battle from /Return Of The Jedi/ against dozens of Star
Destroyers and hundreds -if not thousands- of TIE Fighters. A
second free upgrade enhances the sounds and visuals somewhat,
making this an unbelievably fun game. For variety, pick up the
sister game, "Battle For Yavin".

</quote>

Something to check out.

A couple of games that gave me tons of fun were Star
Trek: Klingon Academy. I had much fun with the campaign and
online play. I hear there are some nice mods for it too. I heard
the forerunner of KA, Starfleet Academy was good but never
played it. Then there was Star Trek: Bridge Commander. That
provided some great space battles. But in KA it was cool the way
you could blow off a warp nacelle and have colorful plumes of
plasma leaking into space. I'm sure there are others I can't
think of right now.

Thanks, I'm a bit unsure about Trek, in that while I loved the original
series, I never really clicked with the newer ones, although I enjoyed a
lot of Voyager, and Enterprise. I'm a bit of an old git, I liked the
cold war feel that the older series had, and found the non-
confrontational approach of Next Generation a bit limp. I don't really
do on-line games either. But I'll try and investigate further.

If you like the cold war aspects of the first series then
you should like Klingon Academy. It's does have cold war and
civil war aspects to it.

I'm gonna finally play Independence War 1 and 2. I
bought both of them years ago and only played a few missions of
the first game. I got stuck and forgot about it. But your
description has me interested in finishing these two games.

Top 10? That depends on what sorta space games you like. :D

But here's a few of various types that you should be able to find
reviews for:

Orbiter (http://orbit.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/home.php) isn't bad for a free
3D space sim. It's more about maneuvering under real-time physics
properly (Lunar-Lander anybody) than a space trading/fighting game.

Vega Strike (http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net) is another good free
game. Well... it's still under development and will be for a long time
to come, but you can see that it has potential. ;)

I'm a big X3 fan, but I like the complexity... definitely not a game
for a bit of light entertainent.

Starlancer's a good game, BTW. Tachyon is quite similar, as is Darkstar
One from memory.

Somehow I couldn't get into Star Fury (homepage & demo available @
http://www.malfador.com/starfury.html) but I've a friend who loves it to
bits. *shrug*

Starshatter was one that had some excellent potential, but was let down
by silly imbalances IMHO.

Flatspace isn't bad if you don't mind the ol' arcade style space
combat/trading games

Well there is a simulator called Star Citizen. And it's not a standard simulator. People would call it EVE Online is first person. This sim makes EVE look like child's play. And for Space Stations I would say Star Citizen or X Rebirth.
