Are there any newer Starflight-type games out there?

A number of years ago, I really enjoyed playing Starflight, a
space-based adventure game. While the game was pretty cheesy
graphically (it was made in the mid 80's), I loved the way you could
explore the galaxy, find new planets, mine for minerals, build up your
ship, encounter aliens, and solve galactic puzzles. The game had its
own historical timeline and seemed pretty deep story-wise.

Are there any good modern games that fit what I'm describing? I've
been out of the loop for a while and am looking for suggestions.

Thanks!

I wish. This game rocked.

I think it was the first PC game I was ever "addicted" to.

At the time, the only PC we had was at my dad's office so I would have to go
to his office on the weekends to play!

When he got a new work PC and brought the other one home it was nirvana!

From the shadows, the mysterious nopl...@yahoo.com (solarlux) (if
that IS his real name) conspiratorially whispered:

Nothing new, however Star Control 2 was newer than Starflight, and had
the same basic gameplay, with a lot more fun in the action part and
probably the best dialogue ever seen in computer games.

Give Star Control 2 a try.

Be sure to check out Starflight 2 (duh), www.starflight3.com (for kicks) &
the unofficial, previously released "Starflight 3", known as Protostar (made
by the Starflight folks and was intended to be SF3, but they couldn't get
the rights to the name; awesome game and just has that Starflight feel).

Definitely get SF2 if you haven't, and definitely get Protostar. :)

Been a while and my memory's a tad rusty, but I seem to recall that
Sentinel Worlds and it's sequel Hard Nova are also worth checking out.
Both are heavier on the RPG side of things with more emphasis on squad
combat and such, but still had a good spaceship and exploration side
of things as well.

Freelancer[1] fits some of your criteria. There's a demo available.

Not too heavy on the "adventuring" aspect, but the storyline is fairly good.

If you never played Star Control II, that's been reworked and rereleased on
the web recently, check out http://www.star-control.com and look for stuff
on The Ur-Quan Masters (UQM).

I never played Starflight, but apparently the two have similarities.

WOW! Thanks for that link. It looks like you can actually download copies of
Starflight and Starflight 2 there.

Do they work on a modern PC running Windows? (XP in particular?).

Where can I read up on Protostar? Do you have a link to info?

STARFLIGHT!! ledendary game that,if I had a copy..it would still be
extremely entertaining,I've never found a better replacement actually.
It should be manditory that all space-sim developers be deeply
familiar with this game before even attempting to write a space-sim.
MOO3 as an example.

If you want to avoid OS hassles to go old school, the game was
ported to the Sega Genesis (although any battery backup save
abilities on cartridges that old may be questionable). If you want
to go portable old school, the Nomad is a portable Genesis and can
probably still be had at a decent price if you look hard enough.
Portable (if you don't mind that huge battery pack) Star Control,
Turrican, Starflight...it just doesn't get any better than that.

Yes. And navigation in order not to get lost, and science in order to do
other things -- it's really not that tough to get your crew trained up in
short order though if you spend your money right at the start (Veloxi pilot
and Human science officer, both trained to the max in their respective
fields).

Yeah, I remember many long hours playing Starflight. It was
especially "realistic" in the way it took forever to travel to distant
systems (I think we missed some of the major flux-routes). So we
ended up taping down the appropriate arrow-key button and leaving for
several hours while the ship travelled.

I think a company would have a hit if they would make a
Starflight-type game and perhaps mix in some Tradewars elements (i.e.,
let you create a fleet of fighters, own planets, etc). Any game
execs out there listening???

Anyway, to summarize the suggestions I've received so far:

Starflight 2
Starflight 3 ("Protostar")
Starflight 3 (made by fans)
Star Control 2
Star Control 2 - Ur-Quan Masters (Open Source project)
Sentinel Worlds
Hard Nova
Solar Winds I & II
Turrican

So if there are any other Starflight fans out there, enjoy! ;-)

Havent played it yet, but whales voyage 2 sounds fairly like a Starflight
like game. The game is freeware nowadays.

Beware that the Nomad measures battery life in minutes, not hours. ;p

Arggh, stop teasing, it won't be available here until tomorrow at the
earliest. :(

On the other hand I did snag some of the mods for the demo, so i've been
able to try out various other ships and weapons and find the rogue base.
I still haven't found Fort Rochester though which has other ships on it
according to the mod readme.

STARFLIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My god, I lost half of my Freshman year of college to that game! My
roommate brought it back from Christmas, and we were instantly hooked. For
a while, my PC ran 24 hours a day with myself, my roommate and my
girlfriends all putting in endless hours of exploration. What a great game.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane....

I actually have no idea. Haven't tried running once since I had a Pentium
II, and THAT was... well... a challenge, since they needed some righteous
MoSloing :) I don't see why they won't -work-, but they might be just...
well.. way too fast. There are probably some slow-down apps out there now
that know how to deal with the current machines - I just haven't delved
recently. :)

Hrm... nothing off the top of my head, though honestly? A GOLDMINE of
nostalgia would have to be: http://www.the-underdogs.org/

They've got info on the game, and the game itself I -think-. In any case,
you should find what you need there. And then some ;)

MySlow works well for DOS games. You just load it up, make a link to
the file, alter the properties, and away it goes every time. Got X-Com
running at a reasonable (and smooth!) speed this way.
