When I lost my Good Robe of Archmagi, and my Animal Figurine, and my light
crossbow of speed, did I just carelessly misplace them? No.
Is it a bug? No.
Did I just imagine it? No.
I've heard lots of other people complain about vanishing items. After 200+
hours of playing, I finally figured the damn thing out. It's a new "feature"
in BG2.
When your party members start running around like crazy (either horrified,
confused, hopeless, I don't know which) they start dropping items. You can
do the same to your enemies by using certain spells.
I HATE IT!!!
Most players won't even know this is happening, especially if it's in the
middle of combat. It's pretty damn annoying. It was driving me nuts how my
figurine & robe of good arch magi just vanished out of thin air. Now I know
how it happened...
This might be but I have noticed that the same happens when you're attacked
by a Nishruu or Hakeashar. You describe typical mage items there so this
could be the cause.
F.
In additon, if your character is given an item due to an NPC-interaction
conversation and your backpack is full, instead of dropping the new item
onto the ground, it drops an item out of your backpack onto the ground...

Well, I lost my familiar somehow and never got it back (even with an
editor)... and no, it did not die in combat...

I've seen it happen with Minsc, too, though. He ended up dropping the
talking two-handed sword (lilarcor?) during one of the dragon battles when
he got hit by fear. Fortunately, I remembered this, went back, and was
able to retreive it. Some kind of indicator that a weapon has been dropped
would be nice.
I've also noticed that the Nishruu will sometimes cause weapons to become
"unwielded", leaving just fists in the quick weapon slots until I remove
the weapon from the slot in inventory and put it back. This appears to
only happen with magic weapons, but then I don't wield any "normal" weapons
anymore - what self-respecting god-child runs around with a plain
longsword?!

Hmmm just got an image in my head; the almighty thingomabobdemon whatever
boasts "FOOL! NO magic can harm me!" and then the hero draws his common
shortsword and rams it between the eyes of the monster... :P

Glad it's not just me...

When you use the Rift Device it's dropped on the ground. It's probably
still lying there where you used it :)
