IMO, 4 half-elf fighter/preserver/druid... don't waste time with
psionicist, gladiator, cleric or thief classes. Let them get up to 4th
level in each class (this takes a good deal of time) before breaking
out of the arena. Clerics, though, can be useful in Wake of the
Ravager, so you might make one or two fighter/preserver/clerics
instead.

The easiest I found was 4 giant gladiators.

Hmm, I had 2 figter preserver druids, a fighter preserver thief and a
fighter preserver psionic. it seems the thief was better than useless in
some cases at least, but the psionic was close to worthless (except for
the fact that they coul be made immune to any energy based attack
including fireball and other such destructive spells...

I found the default party that you get when you just started the game
without creating characters to be pretty useful. They are half-giant
gladiator, thri-keen fighter/cleric(fire)/psionic, human dual class
preserver*/gladiator, half-elf preserver/cleric(earth)/thief.

Hmmmmm.... interesting. I had a half-giant gladiator (talk about a
tank!), a halfling psionicist/ranger, and then a human fighter-preserver
and fighter-druid. I realize that other parties get more bang for the
buck with 3 classes each, etc, but my party tore up Shattered Lands, and
they're only limited by my stupidity in Wake. I also had a thief with no
other classes who I'd bring in to pick a lock or climb a wall, etc. It
worked really well for me, anyway. Just a few thoughts.

What ever characters you choose, be sure to include a preserver, cleric
and thief. Multi-class when you can, but I have played the game through a
couple of times and I find having a half-giant Gladiator makes life easier
for your party.
Don't touch the Thri-Kreen as they can't wear armour.
My last party consisted of a Half-Giant Gladiator, a Mul (or any other
strong race) fighter/cleric, an Elf Fighter/Preserver/Thief and a Dwarf
Fighter/Psionicist. I've also used parties with combinations of the above.
Most dual class characters will be at level 10 (highest) by the end of the
game.
Have fun.
