I don't want it to be like MM7 where I struggled along with a Ranger
and Thief in my party the first time :(. I found that MM6 was so
biased against fighters, the best party was probably three sorcerors
and a cleric. Conversely, MM7 was extremely pro-fighters, I found that
two knights, archer and cleric was best. MM8 is not so bad because you
can always take a knight and add others as required.
My style is more fighting-oriented, I used heaps of Shrapmetal and
Dragon Breath in MM6 but mostly just buffing spells in MM7 and MM8.
What is the general feeling about fighters vs magic users in MM9? Are
clerics as vital as they were in MM7 or as useless as they were in
MM8?
Nigel.

I took a party of four mages through the entire game without any
problems at all. Didn't need any healing other than the occasional trip
to the inn (or rest in the wilderness).
I also took a party of one of each spellcaster (Mage, Lich, Cleric,
Druid). The Cleric was useful for casting high-level "Turn Undead" as
well as occasional healing ... but only because the party wasn't as good
at killing :)
As far as fighter characters ... dunno, never used 'em :)
I'm level 27 and have achieved my promotions for all my characters except my
Lich, who is only a scholar so far. My Priest is deadly and cool with her
Lightning, Column of Fire, Meteor Shower and Turn Undead, and very useful
with Purify, Heal, Town Portal, Fleet Foot, Wizards Eye and Lloyds Beacon.
My would-be lich can't really do much yet, I only use him for Elemental
Blasts and Pain Reflection (very neat and useful spell), and a bit of
healing when the priest is otherwise busy. But I suspect he will be cooler
later on.
My Paladin never uses his magic - he might, if both priest and scholar were
out cold, but I never let it come that far. But he and the Gladiator has
about 450 hp each and a AC above 100, and they can do up to 150 damage each,
every round. Especially when boosted by the Priest with Faith and Bless. My
Gladiator is Master Disarm trap and opens everything, the Paladin is Expert
Merchant and I'm never short of money (carrying roughly 220.000 GP right
now) the Priest is Expert Repair and fixes everything, and the scholar is
Expert ID Item and recognises everything.
I would not take two identical classes - that would be too boring, since you
can only do the promotion quests, if you have someone to promote. If you
took only mages, you would do only 2 quests, instead of a mixed party giving
you 8 quests. With my party I can't do the quests for Assasin, Ranger, Druid
and Mage, so if I were to play it again, I would probably choose this set
for game 2.

Actually, you can do all 8 promotion quests in one game and get
credit for them too, except maybe the lich quest which I haven't
gotten to yet. All you need to do is accept both quests from the
appropriate NPCs like assassin and gladiator, finish both of them
then go back to the the NPC for the official promotion. Go back
to the one you actually want first and you will get the promotion,
then go to the other one for the XP and gold.

Right on! My level 127 lich ruled Chedian, but, admittedly, did need some
help from my priestess and her neverending DI to finish off the dragon when
the lich was still level 75.
