I've been receiving a lot of requests for DAGHACK. So for those of
you who are capable of installing the FULL game on their computer,
this is for you. You have two choices:
1] Download the attached file into your DAGGERFALL directory and
rename it as DAGHACK.EXE and run it everytime you want to
play Daggerfall with no CD check.
2] Follow these steps (just in case your build isn't compatible with
the attached file:
[Go to a DOS prompt for you Win95 fanatics]
A>Go to your DAGGERFALL directory via: CD\DAGGER or
CD\FALL or wherever you put THE!!! game
B>Type: REN DAGGER.EXE DAG.HAK
(next step is optional to make a backup)
C>Type: COPY DAG.HAK DAG.BAK
D>Type: DEBUG DAG.HAK
once in the program DEBUG, you'll get this:
- <----- that's right, just a dash, but that's what you get
E>Type: s 100 FFFF 83 D9 FF 89 C8 07 5F
(just do it!)
You should get something like:
1B68:0FE5 <--- usually 0FE5 will be the spot; but if
- not, use the last four digits for the
next step
F>Okay, now you found the place to hack it. Using the last
four digits of 1B68:0FE5 (yours may be different), type:
e 0FE5 83 D9 FF 31 C0 07 5F
^^^^---------remember, put the last four digits HERE!
G>Congrats! Now just type:w <---that's the LETTER w
H>Lastly, type:q <---that's the LETTER q
I> Now you just made the file called DAG.HAK, rename it
to DAGGER.EXE and you're ready to go. Type:
REN DAG.HAK DAGHACK.EXE
If you still have problems, let me know! The multiple builds
~may~ change the code around to where DAGHACK won't
work.
PROBLEMS:
You may need to copy RUMOR.DAT and COPYFILE.DAT from
your SAVE0\ and ARENA2\MAPS\ directories to the ARENA2
directory if they every reach zero. This is a bug from one of the
first builds that DAGHACK didn't fix.
DISADVANTAGES:
No movie clips from the CD can be played while using
DAGHACK (since you don't ~have~ the CD in the drive). So,
it's either play your audio CDs or watch the movie intro OVER
and OVER again! }:-)
DISCLAIMER: This file is not a program until you rename it.
I am not responsible for any problems you may encounter with
the LAW!!! I wrote this so I could play audio CDs while running
DAGGERFALL, not to cheat Bethseda out of the money they
deserve for making an awesome game! Oh yeah, I am NOT
responsible for any problems you may encounter on your
computer either.

Ummm.
This is certainly very nice of you, I suppose.
But isn't it easier to:
1. Text edit z.cfg to point to your hard drive instead of the CD-ROM
2. Run 'fall.exe z.cfg' to start the game instead of dagger.exe?
I certainly think so! :)

It only costs an additional 80 MB hard drive, above and beyond the 450
MB huge install, to get the *real* full install, so why hack the
program?
Sandra
Larry
>Larry
It has, but the explanations is short. <grin>
Do a huge install. Make a new directory. Name it whatever you ant
to. I call it DAGGERCD. Look in the ARENA2 directroy on your CD.
There should be about 80 MB of *.VID file. Copy the into DAGGERCD.
Edit Z.CFG line referring to PATHCD. It will currently point to your
CD drive. Make it point to DAGGERCD.
Call the program with FALL Z.CFG instead of DAGGER.
Sandra
Because if you don't have enough RAM, Causeway will create a dynamic
swap file instead of the static one DAGGER.EXE sets up. This will cause
MEGABYTES of lost clusters when the game crashes. Game performance is
also slower because Causeway was not optimized for your hardware by
DAGGER.EXE. Nor is the game guarenteed to work as the mouse is
initalized and other operating system requirements are checked in the
DAGGER.EXE program. NOT the main executable. Finally, if you bypass
dagger.exe, you run the risk of running Daggerfall with smardrive write
behind caching enabled which can also seriously trash your drive in the
event of a crash. Such damage would include lost clusters, crosslinked
files and corrupted FAT tables.
Are these good enough reasons NOT to not bypass DAGGER.EXE???
Hal Bouma - Daggerfall/10th Planet programmer
h...@bethsoft.com
Some of them are good reasons, Hal. I don't agree with all of them.
But I think the chances of it working right that way are better than
the chances with a version dependant hack of the executable.
I suppose in the future I should recommend VirtualCD from
http://www.logicraft.com for the purpose.
Sandra
This happened to me, so how do I prevent losing clusters and nasty crashes?
>This happened to me, so how do I prevent losing clusters and nasty crashes?
<snipped history in interest of clarity>
1. Don't try to run with FALL.EXE if you haven't tested with
DAGGER.EXE. I would think most people would try the program out in a
smaller installation before commiting 500MB+ to a game. If you get
nasty crashes running DAGGER.EXE, FALL.EXE won't work either.
2. Apparently you shouldn't run FALL.EXE if you have 8 MB RAM,
although it surprises me that anyone would have 500MB+ hard drive
space available and only 8 MB RAM. Especially since having 8MB RAM
causes the program to allocate even more of your hard drive to virtual
RAM for the game.
3. I've never, to my knowledge, gotten lost clusters from running
Daggerfall in the manner which we are discussing. But when I do get
lost clusters from a program crashing, I run CHECKDSK or SCANDISK and
recover them.
4. Cross-linked files and overwritten system areas are symptoms of
very ill-behaved programs, and I have not seen that behavior in any
program I have used since about 1988. If Hal says FALL.EXE will do
that under some circumstances, then I suppose he would know. If your
system is already misbehaving, stop trying to use FALL.EXE and switch
to VirtualCD. It will take up the same amount of space on your hard
drive, plus the size of the Minimal install you will have to put in
place of your Full install.

Thanks to you folks, I have tried "fall z.cfg" instead of "dagger".
My 200 patch still crashes out every half hour (win95) or every hour
or two (DOS) but now it terminates with an error message instead of
locking up the machine.
Then again I have 24 megs of RAM, so at least currently the program
seems not to use virtual memory illegally. I find no residue when I
scan the disk after a session of fall.exe
And I do have the CD in the machine while playing. If I worked for
Bethsoft, I would insert diverse checks which determined if the CD
was inserted, and if not jump to the conclusion that the program was
pirated, proceeding to trash the harddisk beyond recognition.
But that's just me, perhaps Bethesda Softworks has a more
user-friendly code of ethics! :)

The first signs of mental breakdown can be subtle,
such as for instance a slightly changed signature.

Any software company that did that would have to be *very* certain of
the accuracy of their CD check, and even then I'm not sure that any
court of law would support trashing someone's ongoing work for hire in
retribution for a suspected $60 theft. I think the disclaimer of
non-responsibility for damage caused using a program probably does not
cover intentional damage.
