BG2: Valen's mistress help! (possible spoilers)

Okay, so I got the quest to speak with Valen's mistress in the evening.
Before doing so, however, I have completed several quests, including the one
from the Shadow Thieves that involved taking out Mae'Var. Now when I go to
the graveyard district, Valen's mistress is nowhere to be found. Does
completing the quest for the Shadow Thieves prevent this quest from being
completed? Or is there a certain time of the evening in which she can be
found. On one other session, I accidently spoke with her, but upon
completing the conversation I reloaded my game, so I know she's supposed to
be out in the open at night. (Before anyone asks, yes, I'm sure I didn't
accidently save after completing the conversation as the uncompleted quest
is still listed in my journal). What am I missing? Please don't spoil me
too severely, I guess I'm only interested in knowing if I can speak with the
mistress.

You have to decide at this point, if you join with the thieves or with
the graveyard gang by paying the party you chose the gp you are
collecting for "Imoen's rescue". Apparently it's not very clear that
Valen's request is not just another quest. So if you paid the thieves
there is no way back.

But I haven't paid the Thieves. All I did was complete the MaeVar quest for
Renal Bloodscalp. Where can I find Valen's Mistress?
