2d6 means you roll 2 6-sided dice and add the total.
1d9 means roll 1 9-sided die... etc.

If you look at the character screen (the one that shows the MIGHT, ENDURANCE,
SPEED, INTELLECT, AGE, EXP. POINTS, LEVEL, etc.), you will see the total
damage that the weapon your character is holding will do. By switching
weapons and looking at those numbers, you can establish which weapon is
better.

Just a guess: because the baddies you're facing are either heavily
armoured or die with less than 70 damage? I thought I noticed that
spells would frequently cause damage way outside the range they're
supposed to be; some monsters are immune or resistant while others are
very susceptible to certain spells. Maybe creatures likewise have a
certain resistance to physical attacks (aka armour class).

That number is for increasing his chance to hit. +89 to HIT, not to
DAMAGE.
