Do you see the difference between 16 and 32bpp? If so, is there a site
that has screenshots for each color depth?

I was curious to know if I need to set my Windows desktop to 32-bit so that I
could see the game in 32-bit. I know that since it uses DirectDraw, the
setting of the game should be separate from the Windows desktop setting, but
I just want to make sure. Anyone know?

(using a Matrox Millenium G200 - game runs just perfectly with it)

You don't have to, but it's been known to fix some obscure problem if you do
encounter one and there's a difference between your desktop color depth and
your game.

The biggest difference I saw was in the Rest animation with the campfire.
In 32-bit, all the color gradients are smooth. In 16-bit, the gradients
are sharp: the glow of the campfire on the tent has 'rings'.

i believe 16 bit is 5, 6, and 5 bits respectively. because our eyes are
more perceptive to variances in green, the 6 bits were given to green, so
i hear.

The human eye can detect differences between 16- and 24-bit, but just
barely.

The biggest difference for me was that my computer ran a lot smoother in
16. Of course, I am only running a P-120. I went the configuration
screen and set the AI speed down to 15 and that made the biggest
difference of all. My hat's off to Black Isle for making such a complex
game that will actually run on something less than this year's model!
