The Daggerfall experience scheme looks to have made Sorcerers almost useless.
I haven't found that potions to restore spell points are readily available,
although the manual says that they do exist. If you play the game strictly by
the rules, you would have to wait until your character found a scroll with the
receipe for the potion, then located all the components and progressed high
enough in a guild to use the potionmaker.
Sorcerors have only spellcasting as primary and major skills, so the only way
initally to advance in class is to buy training or discover the potion
receipe. I don't see a lot of spell absorbing opportunities in the earlier
dungeons. It looks like it will take a loooong time to build up a sorcerer.
Is anyone doing this with any success and wanting to describe their
experiences?
Bill
I'm confident once I get hold of some restore power potions or
artifacts and once the big-time spell-casting monsters arrive on
the scene the disadvantage will quickly disappear. In the end game,
a sorceror is the only thing to be! Like you said, heh heh, monster
MONSTER spells. Good luck and let me know how your game's going!

As your skill in a school of magery increases the casting cost for
spells that use that school decrease. So - my guess would be that
you have a low skill whatever school the 'dispell' uses.

Is this because you're character is getting 'caught' in the fireball
himself. ie - if you cast the fireball from a distance does this
still happen?
I agree that this seems like a great area for abuse. I would think that
at best you'd get a 'portion' of the casting cost for an area effect
spell that hits you. Or better yet, I don't know if you should be able
to absorb your own spells at all. I wonder if Bethesda is looking
into this as a 'bug' in there patch list?

Look for Imps, they are a good low level spellcasting monster.

Unless they've changed it from how spell casting worked in Arena,
as you rise in levels the cost of casting individual spells decreases.
For example, a spell that might need 500 spell points at 2 or 3 level
could only need 75 or so at 10 level. This allows you to cast more
powerful versions of spells later in the game when you need to the
most.

I've been adventuring for a while now, and I've seen very few Imps. Just
in the starter. Maybe I've been "unlucky," since my character has general
spell absorption as well, and I'd *love* having the spell points!
Hats off to the guy with the Sorcerer. Keep that ebony dagger sharp!

Spell costs are based on your skill level for that particular realm
of magic. The higher your skill, the lower the spell cost. So the
500 points may be down to 200 or so with a higher skill level.

I think there might be a bug with spell casting, my 2nd-level
character was trying to run past a lich when he cast a spell
and killed himself (hehe :)). OR...It might have to do with how close you
are to your target, some of the blast may hit you as well (and replenish
your spell points). Does your health go down when you cast Fireball???

Not a bug!
You're just experiencing the benefits of Spell Absorption (ain't it great!)
I've found a couple of magical items that cast Fireball. When I'm in need
of some magika, I just get close to a wall (or better yet...a monster) and
cut lose with my Iron tanto of fireball a couple of times which brings my
magika up by absorbing part of the blast.
However, don't get too complacent in your spell absorbing ways. If your
magika is topped-up you won't be able to absorb any more and the spells
will fry you.
The Lich mentioned in the previous message probably cast a ranged spell
(they have Fireball in their repertoire) too close to the target and fried
himself...They don't have spell absorption as one of their attributes (if
they did they would be real tough mothers!)
I played a sorceror in Arena and stuck with the class for Daggerfall
although I modified it a bit to a more hack/slash type...sort of a Sorceror
Sword (Long Sword, Destruction, Dodging for primaries and the other magic
disciplines as major & minor.)
Hey,
Don at Bethesda here. Yes, the maximum spell points for most players is
only 300 SP, but you can create magical items to raise it up to at least
375.
Of course, this certainly is not enough to cast a spell that costs over
500.
The trick here is that as your skill for a school of magic increase, the
cost
of casting spells within that school become less. So while it may cost
your
character 500+ points to cast Dispel Daedra now, as your character grows
and your skills increase, the cost will slowly come down to something you
can cast.
Sincerely,
Don Nalezyty
Don,
Just wanted to say thanks to you, MoJo & Naughty Puppy for taking the
time to post here & give some insight to this truly AWESOME game.
Thanks guys/gals,
