Is it just me, or are RPGs on the computer these days pretty shallow?

You probably shouldn't think of Diablo as a full-fledged RPG. It is more
an action/adventure game with some strong role-playing elements (stats
etc).
Personally I enjoyed the demo very much and I will undoubtedly be
getting
the full version; I'm sure it will be much deeper (i.e. more interaction
with characters). However, I still severely doubt that it will satisfy
the cravings of the hard-line RPG players.
To each his own...

it is a demo. it is made to give you a peek at the features and gameplay.
There is a central plot and lots of sub-quest, the sub-quest are
randomize each new game.
Beside, does SoM or SoE have multiplayer? free internet play?
I think the strength of Diablo is it's multi-player capability. A lot of
people will drop everything just to have this option. And with multi-
players in mind, nobody could stay hooked up online as many hours as
standard rpg so they have to put in shorter quest. It's more for fun.

lude..
As the unix nethack is getting approx. 100+ connects a day at the local
university, I'd say it has appeal.... Damn game that uses &*&%$$*!))@&# as
graphics is still interesting to folks, then this thing is godlike in
comparison.

I would most certainly agree with this, but truthfully I have never really
played what anyone would call an rpg. So for an rpg newbie like me Diablo was
somewhat in depth. Not to mention this is a prerelease demo so I would expect
more later when the actual product comes out. Then there's the other aspect of
multiplayer which sounded really good to me. Anyway I guess we'll just have to
wait and see if they make the full release more indepth.

It depends on what type of RPG you prefer. Obviously, Diablo seems to
surpass whatever is out there right now. Personally, I think it's one
of the more fun RPG type games I've played in a long while (and I'm
picky). I believe that the release version will have more options and
the multiplayer aspect will be something to experience. As for
puzzles, the release version is supposed to adjust the puzzles
depending on how many players are in the quest. Remember, it's just a
demo with crippled features and storyline.
