Once again, a publisher will tackle trying to make Jagged Alliance 3, the
troubled third game in the popular mercenary-themed tactical RPG, reports
Shacknews. bitComposer Games bought the rights to the title, and has entered
preliminary development.
While neither platforms nor a developer have been revealed yet, bitComposer
promises Jagged Alliance 3 "will again deliver the much-loved combo of
turn-based strategy gameplay with roleplay elements." The publisher wants
"to continue the success of the previous titles in the series, while giving
the new version a contemporary look, bearing in mind the strong features of
its predecessors," said managing director Wolfgang Duhr.
Several projects titled 'Jagged Alliance 3' have sprung up at various
developers since Jagged Alliance 2 was released in 1999, starting at JA2 dev
Sir-tech Canada. The most recent was by F3 Games, shown at E3 2007 but not
heard of since 2008.
Strategy First, which published Jagged Alliance 2, will continue working on
a Facebook-style social network game based on the IP. A movie based on the
game has not been heard from since its announcement in 2007.

Hope they don't screw it up but I am skeptical. You missed Hired Guns
which is really JA3 but using a different name.

Hm, no, sorry, Hired Guns was a desaster, but no JA3. It was pretty bad
(Horrible Balancing, etc.) - not nearly as good as Jagged Alliance 2,
which is still better than Hired Guns and much more enjoyable.

I wonder if they'll pull a Bethesda and have JA3 be a shooter.

I never said it was a really good JA sequel, was just pointing out that
it is an unofficial sequel so in theory it is JA3. There are some mods
to deal with balancing issues etc. and it is an ok game. I haven't
played it recently but did have some fun with it when it was released
and will play it again. I've played worse games and think it is
deserving of more than the 53/100 metacritic score.
So is there currently a 'good' successor to JA2?

No, but there are mods (Unfinished Business) to JA2 to extend the
gameplay. Silent Storm has been the best "similar" game since JA2 and
the tactical engine is good and better than JA2 IMO but the strategic
part is light-weight and the setting is WWII and spins off into Sc-Fi in
the later game.
I'd really like another Silent Storm game. I didn't like ss2 as much,
as I thought there was too much relaince on the exoskeletons.
I did like Hammer and Sickle, but it was buggy - it was possible to
actualy lose the game by not doing the quests in the right order - but
you never really knew what order to do things in, without a
walkthough.

I never bought SS2 and only played the first one. I read it was not as
good and is why I never bought it. I just pulled out SS from my closet
and am going to play through it again because I stopped playing it when
it got to the sci-fi part.
