So then, after several days of wondering why NWN2s surround/5.1 sound
basically sounded like shit, I decided to to some checking around in the
forums, and lo and behold, let there be light! Or sound, rather, but no
matter.
It seems that there's a line in the nwn.ini THAT'S TELLING MY MACHINE TO SET
ITSELF TO A TWO SPEAKER STEREO CONFIGURATION!!!! And leaving it that way.
What horseshit. Well, my addled brain is able to discern that that answers
two questions at once, at any rate, so what's the fix?
Turns out you need to edit TWO nwn.ini files--both the one in the game
folder and the one in the Documents/Saves folder. Anyway, here's a quote
from a post made NOVEMBER 17 on the official forum, and that's not even a
Sticky, for godssakes, not that it would matter much, since there are so
many stickys dealing with other crap that it'd be hard to notice:

Apparently Obsidian forgot to either include in the options or fully remove.
Here's a working work around that won't require you to download an external
program or edit a file every time you play.
Go into your save directory (Default is My Documents -> Neverwinter Nights
2) and open the nwn.ini.
Now go to the bottom of the sound options and type in one of the following
options.
Speaker Type=0 ;for 2/2.1
Speaker Type=1 ;for Surround
Speaker Type=2 ;for Headphones
Speaker Type=3 ;for 4.1
Speaker Type=4 ;for 5.1
Speaker Type=5 ;for 7.1
Save the file, and you're done!
<end quote>
What incompetence that such a situation hasn't been fixed after what, 3
patches, but that it even exists in the first place.
Just to make things clear--you'll have to CHANGE the speaker type option in
the nwn.ini file in the /Atari/Neverwinter Nights 2 folder if you have other
than 2 speakers--this is the one that was resetting my system's speaker
config every time I ran the game. I had to edit Speaker Type=0 to Speaker
Type=4.
Then you'll have to ADD the line Speaker Type=(x), where (x) is your speaker
config to the nwn.ini file in the /Documents/Neverwinter Nights 2 folder.
There was always a running joke in the two Diablo-related newsgroups about
the Blizzard programmers being "crack monkeys". I think it may be time to
pass the torch to Obsidian.

A stupid question: I have a 6.1 system. What is recommended? 5.1 or 7.1?
What you see regarding recognized speaker configs is what you get--I saw my
fix and didn't look for anything else.
It's not really that much trouble to edit the .ini files so I'd simply try
both the 5.1 and 7.1 settings and see which one you think sounds best.
But I'm beginning to think that the way this game "thinks", it'll probably
just reset you to Speaker Type=0 since you don't have a "known" speaker
config. :-)
