I know its pretty lame to ask for spoilers for the starter dungeon ,but
here goes...
I made it through the abandoned temple and found a book but not the
idol. How do I get the idol, and where do I take the book?

I went back to the starter town and found the person
I'd overlooked who wanted the book, but I still can't find the idol.
I have the scroll that says something about "the 6th plate and not
the 14th" but I don't know how to use that hint...

Through the teleporter on the dagger-tip part of the island.

I don;t seem strong enough yet to venture past Rravenshore so I'd
really like to find that idol first. Spoil me please!

Ok heres the info on the idol in case you havent found it yet. There is the
large room just before you come out the other side of the temple. The room
has 4 half colums towards the corners and demon head cubes stacked in the
middle. It has a bunch of 'plates' in the floor (hence the clue) that when
stepped on fire of spells at you. Know the one I mean? ok:).....as you enter
that room look at the left wall there is a panel that will open if you stand
on the right plate. The correct one is just a little further into the room,
just about 5 or 6 steps from the panel. Hope this helps.

Thanks! How did you find it? Did you just set out to trigger every one
of those traps? My inclination was to avoid them..
So what's your next step?

That sounds very detailed and very similar to another post I saw
elsewhere but for me that panel doesn't seem to want to open.
I step on the plate which does not fire a spell at me (the plate
in-between two of the half-columns near the far exit) but the
panel won't open. When I go back to the panel it is still closed.
I've tried loading an earlier save game before getting to the room
but still the same thing. I've tried stepping on every plate but
I still can't get that panel to open.

Help please!

Thanks,

Ahh, the old trick plate:)....the one that opens the panel is back into the
room a little more. Stand on the plate that does nothing turn around and
look back the way you came into the room. Turn right a little ( look towards
the panel) the plate that opens the panel will be aprox half way between you
and the panel.

There's more than one non-trapped plate. One of them opens the panel.

The book(Prophecies of the Sun) is the promo quest item for the cleric. Go
take it to Murmurwoods.
Someone previously mentioned that the room with the six pedastals that go
into the floor when you jump on them is the area for the idol; you step on
only one of them(I'm not sure which one this is), and a door opens that
contains the idol.

You need to step on one of the pressure plates in the room that shoots

will find the idol.
