At this point I was in combat with an assassin (him?) and 4 others were in
the inn. I killed all of them, spent the night, but no one thinks he is
dead, and
the original quest is still in my log book. Will this go away ? Is this
assassin
dead ? How can I know for sure ?

Are you a member of the Dark Brotherhood? I had this assassin char.
and I just started slaying everybody in sight. Eventually I got a
note from the Brothers saying I had better join them or else... they
gave me a name and a town, but when I went there I couldn't find him,
he wasn't in any of my dialogue choices (his name was Alabane
Masterston). Help, I wanna slice people for a livin but they won't
let me join!!!!!! Please E-Mail me if you have any answers.
I don't know about the Dark Brotherhood, but the exact same thing
happened for me when I tried to join the Thieves' Guild. I ended up
finding the person on the upper level of one of the stores. In this
case, none of the townspeople were any help...I just started wandering
around the stores clicking on the info button for people in the stores
until I found the person I needed.
If the person isn't in the stores, then try the taverns, guilds, etc.
Failing that, you'll probably have to search the town house by house.
(Don't laugh...this actually happened to me. I was looking for the
"Hawking Residence", and was only able to find it by wandering around
and clicking the info button for every house I passed until I found
it. Fortunately, it was a small town.)
I guess the Thieves' Guild and Dark Brotherhood value self-sufficiency
pretty highly. :-) I felt like Tommy Lee Jones in the Fugitive: "I
want a hard target search of every farmhouse, treehouse, henhouse and
outhouse..."

Ordinarily, yes, but sometimes this doesn't work. I've had a couple
of situations now where I've been sent to find someone, say Theodora
Hawkins, at the Hawkins Residence in a particular town. I go to the
town, and there's nothing in location/general for the residence.
However, there is an entry under the main listing to ask for
information about Theodora Hawkins, but when I try that, no one's
heard of her. The only thing I've been able to do in this situation
is to do a house-by-house search to find the Hawkins Residence.
Of course, other times it works as you say, with the residence listed
in location/general. Weird.

Easier said than done... After a quick mass murder and jail sentence,
the law will love you, but the average citizen has other ideas...

speaking of the "brothers"....... i was sent on a quest to put poison in
some guys drink. how do you "spike" a drink? I have "used" the poison,
dropped it nearby -obviously i was asleep during this part of the lecture
in assassin school.........
Go into the victim's house (using invisibility if you got it) -
usually by a bed will be a glass / cup. Click on it like you're
picking it up, and you'll receive the message "The poison swirls
around the wine, then disappears. Now all you have to do is put it
back" - or a similar message. Drop the wine glass (hmmm - looks like a
sword with gold piled on top now.. oh well). Bolt.

Also there have been some discussion that it's not possible to go up in
rank in the 'Brotherhood, but I have done so several times. I have not
ever bothered with a quest from them. What I do is periodically betray the
Mages Guild and hand over papers I'm asked to go fetch to the "brotherhood.
In exchange they sometimes give me a forgery to take back (in which case I
get double credit for the simple quest) or I only get cash, in which case I
just go do some other quest for the Mages and they never get too upset
about their precious research papers wandering off.

There is some kind of bottle in the house get it and you will automaticaly
mix it with the poison then drop it and go to your contact.

I had an amusing DB assignment conclusion last night. I was sent to a
dungeon kill a traitor to the Brotherhood. I was pretty keyed up, as
most of the DB quests seemed to involve full mage types and
Ben-Hershey was on the edge of not being able to complete most of
them. I came around a corner in a cave tunnel and squashed a rat.
Imagine my surprise when the rat gasps out the final words "I'm not
really a traitor . . . ". Quest was completed!
Why, you dirty rat! :)

Hehehe. Gotta wonder if that was a lucky bug. Given enough bugs -
a guess a few could come out as worth keeping.
* Thread Ramble Alert *
It does seem that a lot of the DB Quests leave me wondering if the
contract was "just." Their Dying Words are often proclaiming their
innocence. I don't mind killing (even innocents) in a CRPG - but I
don't like to feel, well... used. Just tell me it's a murder, not some
BS about protecting a maiden's honor.
Had the one Royal quest where I delivered a cloak to someone. As
it turned out, the cloak killed them and I got blamed by the
bodyguards. Boy was I hot. Get back to whatever-her-name was, and she
says something like "I'm sure he was dying to get the cloak."
OK - that's it, the gloves are off. Gonna tell her a thing or
three. I viciously click on her (dialog mode). Nothing. Click. CLICK.
*CLICK*!!! Nothing. Forgetting myself, I draw my weapon. Damn, one of
those "Can't Hit 'em" NPCs. Fortunately, the rest of the royal court
is familiar with her antics, so no one gets upset with my [temporary]
loss of composure.
I still throw nasty looks at her when I go by. She acts unphased
by this, but I know it's driving her crazy. She probably won't even be
in TES:III - having offended the champion of TES I & II.
*grin*

I've seen several posts concerning 'reputation with X group = +/- xx'.
How does one find out this number? Is there a menu that shows the stats
or an external program that does this? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
