I've still been playing it on and off, between playing jardinains2
(damn time waster game, so addictive yet unsatisfying like candy)
reading Vance, which I got over enough of my dislike for to continue
reading, and watching the toob. I have to say the story in the books
is much more satisfying than NWN2...

I ran into this same bug 2x so far. It seems to be related to having a
summoned skeleton from a warlock in your party. After transitioning to
a new area with said skeleton one of your party members portrait on the
right is transparent. You can't select them, and they don't appear on
screen. If you try to transition from where you change your party
members that person is no longer on the list to choose. Any further
saves & reloads does not fix the issue, or further transitioning. A
reload before this happens is the only way to fix it.

Fortunately I'd been trying to keep lots of backups, so I was able to
recover the first time it happened after trying everything to get
Grobnar back, only loosing about 30 minutes of game time, but it
freeked me out as I don't really pay attention to the NPCs much and let
them do their own thing so I wasn't sure how long it had been.. I'd
been trying to remember to unsummon the skeleton before transitioning,
but it happened again one time I'd forgot. As I didn't want to try to
figure the last relaod I haven't played again yet.

____

I'm finding the forced grouping with certain NPCs for parts of the game
to be rather irritating. I wanted to keep Grobnar, Sand and Elanie
with me at all times, but I'm forced to dump one or even two of them
all the time to add one of the other ones which are required to do
something or other. Of course it can be somewhat irritating at the
beginning of the game as well. When playing my paladin I was forced to
associate with a demonic thief, not something I imagined him doing.

I'm guessing that this only happens when you use the world map for
transitions for distance travel? And not during "enter the door" or
"enter the cave" transitions?

I've noticed that using the world map advances some kind of
time-keeping. Your long duration spells go awy, and your spells come
back as if you had rested. I think they were trying to simulate the
"it took 3 days to get there, so spells wore out and you rested" - but
it had problems unsummoning the skeleton; maybe telling the difference
between a summoned party member and a real paty member.

I stlll don't get why that evil ranger was _necessary_. Sand, too, for
that matter; at least up until the trial.

Eh, I didn't try the "I don't want you along" line of discussion, but I
take it that gets you nowhere as well?

That sounds like a general bug with summoned things that was fixed in
one of the patches. My daughter managed to run the paladin guy into a
warhammer wielding badger.

I don't think you are ever lowered below the party max when a
"required" character is with you. Instead, you get to have an extra
one! I thought that was great.

*** minor spoilers***

Early on, you are forced to take the Paladin with you - if you have
your full group at that point (lessee, I had Neeshka, Khalidwarf
(whatever), and Qara), you have to leave one of them behind to take the
Paladin - party of four, only.

Later on, you're forced to take the ranger to Ember, or whatever that
destroyed village is, and you only get to take two others. Following
that, you're forced to take Sand to investigate, and you only get a
choice of two others.

You do get Shandra as a "bonus" character, which temporarily brings
your party to five characters.

I'm running with the latest patches. I still have some issues with
summoned creatures in general. If I have more than two, I don't get
their faces on the left, or I'll loose faces of the NPCs. I stopped
having the NPCs summon companions/familiars just for this reason, but a
certain warlock keeps wanting to summon his skeleton during battle.
I'm getting rid of that ability as soon as he levels again.

No there are several NPCs you need at certain times where it just says
you have to take them with you. In chapter 3 you have to have at least
one of a couple of them along. I've only seen a couple instances where
it brings them along without making you choose them and changes your
party size - besides the idiots you rescue along the way anyway.

Yes that seems to be the case.

Sand is cool. But yeah, The evil ranger seems a bit much.

Yep. With Neeshka you can't avoid her encounter, you have to go past
her to get to the keep. I actually do like her, she just doesn't fit
with any of my characters so far. I mean what if you want to play a
rogue for instance. I think there's actually too many NPCs to choose
from by the beginning of the 2nd chapter, and you've been forced to
keep playing musical chairs with them throughout the game.

I think the forced grouping is irritating, but by other's comments it
seems it's opened up some ideas to them where they'd be interested in
playing a class they hadn't thought of. It's sort of a showcase of
classes in a way. That's not to my taste, I'd rather play them all as
main characters or have buds throughout the game. I'd rather like to
play where I just kept my buds from the tutorial instead of having one
die, one disappear, and the last get cold feet.

The first time I played through I played as a Rogue/Shadowdancer. So Neeshka
did stay home a lot. However the Neeshka thief side quest still triggered
and I picked her up to complete it.
